car import

Can anyone please tell me if I need to have my title to my American car translated to Spanish? And if so is it done prior to or after arriving in Mexico? I am having the car shipped.

Thanks
Tony

I have read a lot here on bringing a car into Mexico permanently and how it has to be in your name, etc. My question is do you have to have the title to your car to bring it in? Mine is still financed and I don't have the title. I have other documents (registration, insurance, etc) but no title.

You are supposed to get a letter from your lender giving you permission to take a financed vehicle out of the country.

When you bring your vehicle with foreign (i.e., USA, Canada, etc) license plates into Mexico, you are not bringing it in permanently. You will be granted a temporary import sticker for your vehicle. When you sign the paperwork to receive the sticker, you sign a statement promising that you will remove the vehicle from Mexico if you leave permanently AND that you will not sell the vehicle in Mexico.

In order to receive the temporary import sticker for a vehicle with a lien (i.e., a car that is financed and that you are still paying for), the lien holder must give you a letter of permission to bring the car into this country. If that lien holder refuses, you will not be able to bring the car into Mexico.

It costs a lot to import a car permanently. some say prohibitively high. Yes, you need the title as you will surrender the title for Mexican registration.
