I am planning to move to Mexico bringing my belongings with me by plane. I know I will have to fill out the tourist forms at the airport. I do have a 6 month visa. My question is do I have to fill out a menaje de casa for the personal belongings I am bringing across with me? Thank you - Charlie A lawyer who specializes in immigration in Chapala has warned people to NOT fill out the FMM tourist card at the airport in the US or any other country or in Jalisco, at least, you will be denied INM status as it is against the rules to have 2 INM documents at the same time. You fill out the FMM, Forma Migratoria Multiple, with the section called "canje" "How long do I have to make the swap [canje]? You must make within 30 days after your admission to Mexico, through the process called "Issue or replacement migration forms" to the Federal Office of INM that corresponds to your home, which you will get a card immigrant or not immigrant, as the previous meeting of the requirements for this procedure." http://www.inm.gob.mx/index.php/page/Preguntas_Frecuentes_POT When arriving in Mexico on an international flight the INM officer at the airport will stamp your passport and show him both the 180 day visa and the FMM you filled out, he will keep a part, I think,. You have 30 days to go to your local INM office and they will keep the FMM you give them and give you a printout with your NUT # and this will be your temporary INM document showing you are being processed [tramite]. As far as personal effects ADUANA at the Mexican airport will check your passport and 180 day visa and decide if you will pay any duty on any of the items if you get the "red" light.. Most items they want duty on is 16% and if you have a receipt for new items they will use that price. If one of your items is a laptop, you can bring 1 in duty free as well 1 video game, 5 DVDs, etc. If you are bringing many extra bags or boxes with your luggage I personally would declare it to ADUANA [customs] whether I got the "Green" light or not first before they ask if you have anything to declare. Being friendly and calm usually works well I have found out.
