I am currently living in Mexico under a first year FM3 for retirees. I have a Mexican car permit in connection with my FM3. It now appears I will be returning to the US to work and will not renew my FM3 next April. If I return to the US before my FM3 expires, do I have to return the car permit on my way out of Mexico or will it simply expire with my FM3? Thanks.

You need to turn in the FM-3 AND the car permit. The FM-3 belongs to INM (Instituto Nacional de Migración), not to you. The car permit will have to be turned in just before you cross the border (wherever you decide to cross) into the USA.

Esperanza is correct. Please, don't skip these things. There may come a time when you will want to return, and if you have failed to do the proper exit, you'll have a heap of troubles.

I got my car permit in Nuevo Laredo coming in to Mexico. Do I go to the same place to turn in my FM3 and car permit? I think its called Dueno.

You are not required to return to the same place. Any border crossing will do.

Once upon a time if you posted a cash bond you had to go back to the same place to get your money back, but computers have changed all that.

Rolly, When I got my car permit coming into Mexico I had to go to a large building in Nuevo Laredo. I'm planning to exit Mexico through Nuevo Laredo. Do I have to go to the same building on my way out or can I return the FM3 and car permit at the border crossing?

You probably will have to return the sticker at the car barn where you got it, but ask at the 21Km check point. You must return your FM3 to immigration, or you can take it home and turn it in at your area Mexican consulate.
