apartments in mexico city

Can't Post |
Hi all,
A friend and are are planning on travelling to Mexico City this summer and will need a place to live for 5-6 weeks. What's the best way to go about this? We'll be on a pretty tight budget, so the cheaper the better, although obviously we'd like the place to be liveable. Any other info anyone wants to offer would also be much appreciated. Thanks, peace, C

Mexico City is huge and short term rentals are not easy to find. You'll need to stay in a hotel for a couple weeks just to look around. If you are going for school or work, see if they can help you--otherwise you are in for a challenge. Do you speak Spanish?

I do speak Spanish, and we're going to do a project for school. We can work too as necessary... will that help?

If the school has contacts in Mexico City (DF), maybe they can find some student housing. There used to be a publication called Trato Directo which had ads for rentals. If it still exists (its website, tratodirecto.com no longer functions), it is a great source. Short-term is still a problem. Obviously Spanish helps--you'll have to deal directly with landlords in their language. Good luck

The nicer areas in DF (mexico city) can be very expensive. It is a huge city and there are many safe and unsafe areas. I would take the advice to stay in a hotel and check around from there. Don't take the chance on doing anything, you could be very sorry (or pleasantly surprised but don't bet on it). I would recommend the Hotel Catedral right next to the Zocalo - they have rates in the $40 per night range.

Here is an excellent resource which is similar to Penny Saver in the states.

http://www.segundamano.com.mx

You can even do a search of rentals by price.

Try again and be patient. The link is working, but it's a little slow in coming up.
