hi, i'm new to the site, and new to mexico. I live in DF with my girlfriend who is teaching and am looking for a job myself. Does anyone know any restaurant owners or employment agencies that might be interested in my services??? I really want to stay around for a while, so any ideas would be fantastic!!

thank you

First, do you know Mexican law regarding employment of foreigners, and do you have an FM3 and work permit? Search on this website for that info before you look for a job! The fact you didn't mention having a work permit made me mention this. By law a Mexican employer cannot hire a foreigner to do a job a Mexican can, and there are plenty of terrific Mexican chefs. I can see an American chef being hired by a restaurant catering to specific American food tastes, perhaps, such as someone trained in Cajun cuisine maybe.

There should be opportunities for you in DF if you put effort into the job search. Depending on your background and speciality, go around and visit the restaurants that interest you. Foreigners do get hired in the hospitality industry in Mexico, although it helps if you speak Spanish. A friend of mine has lived here for more than 10 years and has worked in the restaurants since her arrival. She started as a waitress, but for the last few years has been the food and beverage manager at one of the upscale resorts. She also does all the desserts and pastries for the restaurant. Yummy!

By the way, you will have to have a job offer BEFORE you can get formal authorization to work. It involves some paperwork on the part of the employer. It doesn't work the other way around. Good luck.
