Working FM2 and imported car

I know this was covered earlier, but I couldn't find it. Can a person with a working FM2 legally keep an imported car in Mexico? Hopefully someone can cite the source. Thanks a million!

as long as the working FM2 is a "Rentista FM2" other types of FM2s are not permitted with the foreign car.

(See article 106 sec 4 paragraph A of La Ley Aduanera for details.)

Glad I could help.
I am not sure exactly what you mean by working FM2. There are various types of FM2s that allow one to work INCLUDING Rentista under certain circumstances and in certain professions. There is no FM2 called “working”. With FM2 Rentista and permission to work one can legally have a foreign plated car in Mexico.

With any other kinds of FM2 (Inversionista, Professional, Científico, Familiares, Técnico, Cargos de Confianza, Familiares, Artistas Y Deportista, Asimilado or Inmigrado) one cannot have a foreign plated car legally in Mexico.
It has nothing to do with whether or not you are working, and has everything to do with whether or not you hold the Rentista Characteristic, (working or not)

See this post for the list of the different types of FM2s.

*(The Ministry of the Interior (under which INM falls) may authorize Rentistas to serve as teachers, scientists, researchers or technicians if it considers that such activities are beneficial to the country.)

Casa, thanks so much! We have FM2s, rentista, and do not work or plan to work. I never realized there were so many types of classifications.
I couldn't get that link to work.

I know very little about this, Casa, but my experience in Mazatlan has been different from what you describe and so is perhaps worth noting. There may indeed be a myriad of FM-2 types, but here they speak mainly of two, and the signage in the local Migracion office mirrors that: FM-2 rentista (visa based on income, with no permit to work) and FM-2 lucrativa (with specific work permit attached). For the FM-2 rentista you need to show evidence of a certain monthly income; my understanding is that the minimum income level varies by city, but in Mazatlan is was about US$1,200 when I got mine in June. Instead of having to show three months of bank statements as in year's past, under the new streamlined procedures the most recent month was all that was required.

An FM-2 lucrativa allows you to engage in a business (property management, pet sitting, and renting your property are three common local examples). In years past, most people got an FM-3 lucrativa for these businesses, but as I'm sure you know the rules and their interpretation by notarios changed earlier this year and now an FM-2 may be necessary to avoid taxes on what we would call in the U.S. "capital gains." I had heard about the prohibition of having a foreign-plated car with certain FM-2s under the new rules that came out this year, so I asked about it specifically at Migracion. I was told that an FM-2 rentista may keep such a car, but an FM-2 lucrativa could not. I later confirmed this at the local aduana office.
