Who Leaves?

I'm new to the board and have spent many hours reading the past posts. My parents retired to San Miguel de Allende 8 years ago and love it. I visit them 3-4 times per year. They love where they are and they love retirement. My husband and I will retire in 18 months and are exploring the town of Tepic, Nayarit. We don't want so much North American influence and all the glitz that SMA now has. It still is a beautiful city, though. My question is this: I know many have retired to Mexico.......but surely some have found it not to their liking for one reason or another. Could any of you share some of the reasons why folks would return permanently to the US? Just curious......we are coming no matter what, just as soon as our youngest graduates college ,we will be on our way!!

This is a great source of information........I have really enjoyed all that I have read.

Apart from the inability to adjust to the style of living in Mexico, I think the two biggest reasons for returning to one's home country are desire to be closer to grandchildren as well as personal health issues which may or may not be able to be handled here.

Not to change the subject, but what do you know about Tepic. Do they have much of an ex-pat community? Any web sites? We've heard from a kayaking guide who was orignally from Tepic that its a beutiful agricultral area.

A friend of ours that lives in Puerto Vallarta has talked of a town half-way between PV and Guad, other than Tepic, that he thinks we should investigate. He has a brilliant mind for business, but he couldn't remember the name of the town unless it was mentioned by someone. Any clues?

One other common reason for many to not stay in Mexico is the cost of living. Mexico is a large country and where you live and how you live determines your cost. You can, as some of the books state, live on 1,000 USD for a family but that is living more on the Mexican style. If you want to live and eat like you did at home it is not cheaper than the US.

Most of the people I know are not retired, but here are some of the reasons for leaving that I’ve noticed:

1. Death or divorce.
2. Better job opportunities in the US.
3. Need to gain more Social Security or pension credits in their country of origin.
4. Desire for their children to be educated in the U.S.
5. Lack of money.
6. Their tour of duty in Mexico was up, and they didn’t come to Mexico with the expectation of staying any longer than a year or two.
7. Finding someplace rated higher on the latest “Best Places to Live” list.
8. Lack of cultural integration and comprehension.

In our search we are looking for a place fairly close to the Pacific coast, yet high enough in elevation not to be in the sweltering heat. Another item on our search list is to NOT be smack dab in the middle of a large ex-pat community. We want an almost total immersion in the Mexican culture. We can handle it. The cost of living also factors in. We will have more than the $1000.00/per month that the books portray as a livable income, but we would like to be able to save for travel. We also want to be able to help our kids/grandkids travel to visit us in our new home. We will explore Tepic in the Spring and take it from there. Below is a site that we have been frequenting for almost 2 years and where I have gleaned the most information on the area. If you can find out the name of the town your friend was speaking of please let me know........I'm always open for new areas. Try this site. The boardhost has been experiencing some health problems but they are soon to be resolved and he should be back "in the pink" soon. He is very humorous in his postings and he and his wife have some great retirement info on the Tepic area.
