When Violence strikes close to your Mexican Home.

I really don't think that I am living in any real danger. All this Drug War never hits anyone I know. Its not something I think about too much. I just got back from a 5500 road trip throughout Mexico with my entire family and had a fabulous time. But it has been 3 months now since the murder of Ecologist Robert Frey, someone I knew in Ensenada. This homicide did not get a lot of attention in the media. When it came to my attention on facebook, I immediately went to a mutual friends house and he was really distraught. He said there was a meeting about it that night and Robert's daughter would be there. We went.
I knew Robert was letting a young Mexican couple stay at his house up the coast about five miles until the house sold. I would have never done that under any circumstances myself. Robert wanted to move inside the City so he could ride his bike everywhere and practice what he preached, living a simpler life. At the meeting his daughter told me the young couple cleared out and probably took the car. There was money that had been withdrawn from his ATM after the fact. She was sure that the young couple had found his, Robert's, financial records like Bank Statements and thought they could loot the account. Robert had just sold his house back in Gringolandia had had quite a chunk of cash in the Bank. They visited him in his apartment in Ensenada and there was liquor. They tied him up and tortured him until he gave up his passwords to the ATM. When they knew that they had the right password, they killed him with a blow to the head. I said they are going to get caught to the daughter. All the ATMs in Mexico have cameras, times and dates. How can they be so stupid to think they can get away with this? I guess I am the only one who knows things like this. They got as far as Guererro Negro(about eight hours south). When they couldn't get any more money out of the ATM, the young Mexican Couple came back to Ensenada, abandoning Robert's car there in Guererro Negro. The next day they went to Roberts Funeral as if nothing had happened. The Agents of the Judicial were also there and came in from all sides with guns drawn and arrested the young Mexican Couple in front of the bereaved. When they were Paraded in front of the Press, they looked as though they hadn't a care in the world, like being sent to the Principals office. The kid said Robert made advances at the girl and that's why he killed him. I guess he just forgot that he had stolen Robert's car and got money out of the ATM. They never did realize there were Cameras in the ATM machine and that's how they got caught. What got me was that the young Mexican Couple looked pretty normal. No Tattoos and no hint of being Narcos or anything like that. I wish there was a moral to this story. I guess your best defense is to look like your are just a lost Gringo trying to live on his Monthly Soc Sec. Keep your real wealth hidden and never drink with the locals under any circumstances. Like animals testing their limits they found his weaknesses and pounced with their impulses. Don't let them know yours and don't leave your brain at the border.
When the story first broke, you should have heard the rumors in the press and among the local Gringo Community. Narcos? He owed the Narcos money. He had discovered a Drug Lab. Robert had stepped on the toes of the Rich and Powerful. The Cops did it. It was a vendetta. I wish it had been one of those forces, because the truth was really the least comprehensible to me. Three lives wasted because of stupidity.

I run into foreigners all the time who think Mexicans are all their friends and they trust them completely. I don't get it. First, it's insulting to Mexicans to think they are all the same and they are all completely trustworthy. They are just as different as we are.

Too many people leave good sense behind when they cross the border. I have a friend who has a maid and the maid has lied to her several times, serious lies not little lies like being too ill to work, but she still trusts her completely. I think it's call "projection." She wants the maid to be trustworthy and for the maid to love and appreciate her, so therefore no matter what the maid does, she is as my friend chooses to see her. I don't see a good outcome with this relationship either but it will end with theft not violence.
