The CURP is the Clave Unica de Registro de Poblacion, similar to a U.S. Social Security number. It’s a series of letters and numbers representing the holder’s first and last name, date of birth, gender, birth certificate or migratory document number, and place of birth. The legislation wasn’t passed last night or last week. In 1996, the federal government decided that every person resident in Mexico should have a universal number to identify them to government agencies, gradually eliminating the need for a separate number for each governmental agency. Right now, a person could have an RFC (personal tax number), and IMSS number, and an RFE (student registration number). With a CURP, everything would be unified. Obtaining a CURP is a very simple process. The required documents and the places where the CURP can be obtained are shown at SAT’s website at http://www.sat.gob.mx/cedula_curp/default.htm and at http://www.sat.gob.mx/cedula_curp/dir_alr.htm It took me all of about 15 minutes to get my CURP last year. FWIW, I opened a new bank account just yesterday, and the bank staff simply put together the relevant letters and numbers which comprise my CURP based upon the information contained in my FM-2. Don’t get all excited. The CURP in absolutely no way supercedes a migratory document. (BTW, I would be very interested in reading exactly what was contained that article in the Manzanillo newsletter.)
