What Holiday Activities Will You Have In Your Neighborhood In Mexico?

My wife decorated our garage entry way with a Christmas Tree, a Nativity Scene and a Village Scene. Our roof has lights and an 8 foot plastic snowman. Next Sunday evening, there will be about 75 children and adults holding a Posada in front of our home. We will furnish candy for the children and warm drinks for all.

The Christmas event in my neighborhood is a posada at the Hotel Sautto to benefit Alma, an organization which helps the elderly poor in San Miguel de Allende. We went last year, too, and the kids came in looking darling, full costumes, Mary on a burro. They knocked down a pinata afterward, as the adults feasted on enchiladas and drank various kinds of atole (sp?), hot chocolate and cider, with or without rum and tequilas. Looking forward to Tuesday night,

In our town we just had a big charity dinner/ auction. Raised 100,000 pesos which will be used to buy foodstuffs for 220 dispensas. These will be delivered to the needy. The parcels weigh over 70 lbs. and provide enough food for a family of 5 for 5 days. This is the 4th year for this project and we are already planning for next year. This is a community(Mexican and foreign) event and DIF has also participated. After the delivery we will have time to celebrate Xmas.

I went to a posada last Friday evening, and no one knew the lyrics to the songs, despite having purchased little booklets at the tianguis. So much discussion ensued over which were the correct lyrics you would’ve thought we were all reading from the wrong Haggadahs. We gave up and lit boxes of mini-sparklers, a joy even better when they don’t have to be shared with children.

My Christmas tree dates from sometime in the late Eisenhower era, one of the first aluminum trees. An Evergleam Pom-Pom Permanent Tree, one of the few surviving 7’ models, a gift from my grandmother. (I was the only grandchild who expressed sufficient gratitude for the tree, the rest apparently basking in good taste.) The revolving color wheel has long since died, and people either love or hate my tree. I still have the original box and paper sleeves for the branches. My own family hates the pink-and-red ornaments that I insist upon using year after year, in remembrance of my grandmother’s affection for pink-flocked trees. I happen to think that it’s beautiful, along with the Doberman angel atop the tree. I leave it up until Valentine’s Day.

Tomorrow night will be a posada for the local children at the church in Santa Maria, right next to the templo antiguo where Jose Ma. Morelos was baptized, followed by a benefit concert featuring flautists from the Conservatory of the Roses.
