USA ins. in Mexico

Can't Post | Private Reply
I totally hesitated to write as I know the answer is here somewhere but for time, can someone answer this question? Thanks. When you call to order Mexican Ins. they always ask if you have ins. in the USA. My question, after you buy Mexican ins. do you need to keep USA ins. if you will not be driving your car in the USA? AND, your USA insurance is not good in Mexico anyway.

Thank you, thanks and thanks again for your answer. Norma

It would be helpful if you were a bit more specific -- It's not clear who "they" are: who did you call to "order" Mexican insurance? Did you get this request from a broker, an online broker, or an insurance agent in Mexico? Are you buying an annual tourist auto insurance policy, or just coverage fora few months?

Here's my experience: I've been buying annual policies for a US-plated car for twelve years, using several different companies (most recently AXA), and have used brokers here in Mexico, as well as some of the online brokers. None have asked if I have US insurance, and I haven't had it since the vehicle was brought into the country. As long as you don't drive the car outside of Mexico, your tourist auto insurance policy should be enough.

FYI -- AXA policies may include coverage while driving in the US, at no extra charge (check with your broker).

Also, requirements/rules may differ depending on the company that is underwriting your policy (if you buy it through an online broker, for example). The best bet is to ask the person you're buying the insurance through for more specifics.

Hope this helps.

One thing to keep in mind, in some states such as Maryland, you must maintain NOB car insurance in order to keep your tags on the vehicle. if you want to cancel your Maryland car insurance, turn in your tags first, then cancel the insurance. If you cancel your insurance before turning in your tags, you are fined daily.

It is true that some Mexican insurance companies require that you have current insurance in your home country. Most companies do not have that requirement.
