We are planning on retiring to Mexico this summer and golf is a big part of our wants. We would like to find a golf course that you can get a membership at that is not exceedingly expensive as we just like to play golf. We are aware of Lake Chapala but there seems to be a lot of minuses even with the pluses. We are thinking about Guadalajara, Puerto Vallarta and the Baja. Are these good ideas or way off base. I am new to the forum but have learned a lot from the postings here.

I don't play golf, so can't give you a personal assessment. There is a golf community in the Ajijic area. There is a better course on the way to Guadalajara. This is according to golfer friends, who are willing to make the fairly long trek to play there.

There were several "great" golf courses planned for the San Miguel de Allende area, but we moved from there to Ajijic over a year ago and don't have current information. You might ask on their forum section.

Morelia has three golf courses: "Club Campestre de Morelia" founded in 1968, which has 9 holes with great difficulty because of very large trees and beautiful lakes; "Tres Marķas", a 27-hole Jack Nicklaus-designed course that hosts the LPGA once a year; "Club Erandeni", which recently opened its fairways to the public. A fourth, designed by Carter Morrish, is under development in Bosque Monarca, now known as Altozano.

Take a look at the Campestre course in Mazatlan! I understand it's very reasonable and a decent place to play golf. There are a couple of other courses, but quite expensive. There are more on the way in new developments as well.
Right now our cost of living is very good compared to a lot of other places, plus we have wonderful cultural events, including a terrific Carnaval and not least, are right on the ocean!

Good luck.
