Thinking of moving to Mexico

Can't Post |
Hi, I have a week trial with mexconnect, so if I do not answer any posts after 7 days, that is why.

My husband and I would like to move to Mexico in April of 2005. He is finishing a turfgrass program and I am a teacher in Alberta. Any ideas or comments about areas to look into? I would love to live somewhere on/near the coast in a not too touristy location. (Depends on work, of course). Any ideas or comments would be much appreciated!!!

Hi Wanda,

Hopefully you will decide to stay with Mexconnect after the free trial. This is THE best place to get up to date information on moving to Mexico. I relied on this site heavily when I was in the planning stages of my move. There is just so much information on this site.

As far as jobs, you should be able to find a teaching job with not too much problem, no matter where you choose to settle.

Hi Marlene, thanks for replying. What do you usually use the Mexconnect site for? Are you living in Mexico right now? If you are, how did you choose the location you are in? Do you have any kids in school? Please let me know if I am asking too many questions!!!

I do not speak Spanish yet so I am not sure if I would be able to teach in a local school, but I think eventually I would like to do that. Thanks again for the repy...

You will get so much help from the readers and resident experts here! Look through the data base and read as many articles as you can.

I settled in Mazatlan because I really like being near the ocean but also wished to be near an international airport for easy access to my homeland in western Canada. The Mazatlecans are special people and this is a working seaport city with so much potential. I had to consider that because I am not of retirement age. It has untapped opportunities while maintaining a small city feel. I like that I can immerse in the culture and not feel like I am in a tourist resort, but on the other hand be involved as much as I wish to with expatriates. Nice balance here, but there are just so many beautiful areas to settle in Mexico. You really must travel here and check it out.

You will get many helpful responses to your questions from all around Mexico on this message board. It is important to be prepared for a major move to a foreign country. Stay with us!

Marklene is right. You'll need more than a week to get the full benefit of MexConnect.

You can find a lot of getting started information on my website at http://rollybrook.com/...o_move_to_mexico.htm

You also should get a copy of the book Head for the Border by Don Adams. This will be your best guide to living in Mexico.

Hope this helps you get started.

If you are even halfway serious about moving to Mexico, you should subscribe to Mexconnect and to the Aim newsletter. The AIM newsletter will give you lots of ideas of different places to live, and cost of living info. Mexconnect is good in terms of getting answers to questions. I have not seen any other sources of info that are terribly useful.

I do not generally recommend people move to Mexico planning to work. Aside from the difficulty of getting a work permit, wages are much lower than the US or Canada. I know some people do it. The best solution from a financial situation is to get paid in first world dollars and telecommute. In other words, get a job in the US, telecommute using the internet, get paid in US dollars, but live in Mexico. Probably not feasible with your careers.

The other comment is that you should try out Mexico for size before you look to move permanently. We went down for a month and decided not to move to Mexico, nice place to visit, but not our cup of tea for full time.

For those planning to live in Mexico, one of the best sources for
information, especially on the cost of living, is the AIM
(Adventures in Mexico) newsletter. It has a practical focus,
with each issue covering a different town or area. $19 per year,
Apartado Postal 31-70, Guadalajara, Jalisco, 45050, Mexico. (My
2002 renewal included an envelope addressed to 1761 Hotel Circle
S, Suite 100, San Diego, CA, 92108, USA). Ask for the back issue
list. Some issues include houshold budgets by readers and
residents, to give one a better view of actual living costs.
They do not have a website.

Good luck,

Marlene, and if you get homesick you can watch Canadian TV (to include many of your local stations) anywhere in Mexico, or listen to some 8 radio stations from Edmonton and Calgary, all on your Star Choice satellite system, with the same size dish used in Canada. Bel Expressvu doesn't work.

I'm watching the "National" (CBCCalgary) right now in Central Mexico on a 75 cm dish. Normally I watch the channels from Vancouver, Victoria, and Seattle.

Hi Richard. Thanks for your ideas. I am actually working for an online school in Alberta right now, so ideally I would like to keep working for this school while living in Mexico.

But you are right, we need to spend some time in Mexico first. I have been to PV, Mazatlan, Mx City and Guadlahara, but only as a tourist and only for a week at a time. Hopefully this summer we will be able to seriously look at some locations in Mexico.

To subscribe to AIM looks like I have to use "snail mail" if they have no website - thanks for the resource, Richard!

And if you get tired of watching TV you can go shopping at Wal-Mart, Costco, Sams, etc and have lunch at McDonalds, KFC or other "home town " food places.
