The new court system comes to Lerdo

The new court system -- public trials with oral arguments -- will begin in Lerdo in August. That was the word from a large public meeting yesterday in Lerdo with the Governor and Chief Justice of Durango.

Training programs for judges and lawyers have been underway and will continue. 100 million pesos have been set aside to build new courtrooms to accommodate the public trials.

This certainly a major step toward modernizing and sanitizing the justice system.

It's gonna take awhile for the judges to let go of their unrivaled power. I wonder how the rules of evidence will develop, and who has the burden of proof: the government or the accused? Do they get it?
