Thanksgiving in Mexico

Can't Post | Private Reply
So, how are other ex-pats and long-term visitors planning to celebrate this typically American holiday this year in our homes away from home? The centerpiece of our comida will be, as it has been for the past 6 years, a roasted chicken (bought from a street vendor), with Mexican sides such as corn, tortillas, mushrooms, salsa, rice, and strawberry mermelada. With lots of lime and chiles and cerveza. Of course, guacamole. Maybe a gooey tres leches for dessert washed down with hot, thick cinnamon-laced coffee. What's not to be thankful for????

I'm going to have a big pizza and beer party for about 25 people.

Go for it, Rolly!

That sounds like my kind of Thanksgiving dinner. The only problem is that cold pizza sandwiches on white bread with mayonaise the next day are not my favorite.

Rolly is right, mustard, sweet relish, and a spoonful of capers, and it has to be rye bread.

You guys are just plain weird. Everybody knows that cold leftover pizza with anchovies and half-drunk cans of warm beer is the breakfast of champions. Waiting for lunch to get your initial daily intake of carbs, grease, and sodium is plain foolish.

But then of course, there's * sigh, drool * menudo to be slurped......

We plan on having a turkey and baked ham dinner with all the trimmings. There will be my wife and I and another couple, that lives in town, from the U.S. We will also have 14 others persons ( All Mexicans) that are friends, relatives and neighbors. We have done this before and all enjoy this event, where not only the turkey gets "stuffed".

Hubby and I have been invited to the traditional thanksgiving feast. Some of our neighbors from the USA are planning a dinner for about 50 expats (on the beach) and everyone is cooking and contributing. I are really looking forward to it because without a calendar to remind me, Canadian Thanksgiving slips by and it is just another work day. They are talking about things on the menu that we don't do in Canada or in Mexico, so it should be simply nummy!

Probably a dozen restaurants in San Miguel do a complete traditional American Thanksgiving dinner, and we are having one that starts with cream of chestnut soup, a salad of pears, walnuts and gargonzola cheese, roast turkey, cornbread stuffing, sweet potatoes, cranberry relish, a couple more veggies, and either pumpkin pie, pecan pie, or apple tart with ice cream for dessert. No cooking or cleanup, and I've got a stewed chicken I made for soup that will provide sandwiches the next day. (I'm a white bread, mayo, lettuce and tomato person myself, at least with poultry sandwiches.) Too many years of fixing the complete dinner for dozens of people to make me ever want to tackle cooking a whole turkey myself again.

Did everybody read Don Adams' column in MexConnect this month about the real first Thanksgiving, which was about 50 years ahead of the Pilgrims and which happened in Mexico? Excellent! Congratulations to all those who put together this excellent food issue!
