I have read and heard how expensive it is to own and license a Mexican car and even though I have been told how to find out I always had doubt that the figures were right. I had read that a tag/tax could be as high as 10% of the original price the first year and declined 1% per annum. For those that may be interested, my dad just bought a Mexican Honda CR-V and here are the true figures from Veracruz.
Paid for the car at the agency $277,500 NP
Tag and tax:
IMP.S/Tenencia $2,308.00
Derechos ALTA 404.00
Derechos E.F. 202.00
TOTAL $2,914.00
Not as bad (the tag and tax) as anyone or I had predicted. While the car was overpriced, the tag/tax wasn’t as bad as he would have paid in many states. While shopping he noticed that if you buy a car or truck made in Mexico the sales prices are more in line with the US.
