Switching plates...ATVs...

If you bring a US plated vehicle into Mexico on an FM3, can you get a Mexico plate for it later? And do you need a vehicle permit for your ATV? If we bring the ATVs we will be bringing them (2) on a trailer pulled by our truck. So, do we need a vehicle permit for the trailer as well?

For all practical purposes, the answer is NO, you cannot get Mexican plates for your truck.

You will need proof of ownership for the trailer -- title or registration papers. It does not count as a vehicle, but it is treated like one for registration.

ATVs I don't know about.

Something else to consider: make sure that your insurance policy lists your trailer. Some insurers will deny coverage on everything if you're involved in an accident while towing an undeclared trailer of any sort. Be sure to ask your insurer about this. You'll be coming into Mexico with a Tourist Policy more than likely issued by a company somewhere in the country in which you live and in the U.S. the terms of these policies can vary considerably, depending upon which state you purchase in.

And to anticipate another question; even if you come into Mexico with an FM-3 you'll still be insured under a Tourist Policy. Both you and your vehicle are guests in the country under the provisions of an FM-T or FM-3.

And as far as cost is concerned, it's much less expensive to insure your foreign plated vehicle than a Mexican plated one.

Go back to the homepage and find the website for CANAMEX insurance. There are several links to articles that may be of interest to you. This is a referral, not an endorsement.

This information is based on my personal experience. Others may have differing stories. Have a safe trip down and stop to smell a rose or two during the journey.
