Sometimes very strange Auto Accidents in Mexico.

I was just walking over to the Brake shop to pick up my truck, when I witnessed a hard accident at an intersection. Both cars were heavily damaged. They looked like they had both hit the wall at Indianapolis. Yet their engines were both still running so both drivers fled the scene dragging metal and debris. I theorized that they both were driving stolen cars and that it was better to get away with a wrecked car than none at all.

While it is possible the cars were stolen, it is more likely it was nothing more than the common way of dealing with an accident -- run away. By running away, the one who causes the accident avoids fines and having to pay the other guy's repairs. Since they both ran, it could be that each thought he was at fault.

I was sitting in a coffee shop in Harlingen Tx. a few years ago when I heard a loud crash in front of the store. Two fairly new vehicles. The drivers of both cars jumped out and ran away in different directions. When I left the shop I asked one of the officers at the scene about what happened. He told me that both cars were stolen and that the drivers took-off, didn't want to be arrested. He told me it happens all the time in Harlingen, on the Tx. Mexico border.

Insurance isn't a legal requirement, and not having valid plates is a minor deal, at least here in Sinaloa. Some people go for quite some time without paying the yearly registration fee, and then in the newspaper will come the offer to get current for a reduced price. :-)

The common situation (as Rolly mentions) is for drivers to try to agree quickly at the scene, and then skedaddle, in order to keep the Transitos out of it. It gets complicated and involves money, and time at the station to sort things out, once they get involved.

Until 3 weeks ago, auto insurance was not required here in Yucatan, and even the most minor of bumps between bumpers takes 2 hrs - 4 hrs to resolve if the Peritos get involved. If 2 parties cannot come to agreement when there are conflicting claims and different stories, both parties can be taken to jail until some agreement is reached. These realities have encouraged us to settle a number of bumps from others by accepting curb-side payments. Take the money and run (?)

Old-timer friends here in Merida told us this morning how they were riding in a cab one evening, and a 22 yr old chica w/no license, no insurance, and not the owner, (daddy's big car), T-boned the taxi. The chica completely blew a stop sign and hit the cab hard enough to force the cab onto the sidewalk and into a corner tienda.

The police took our friends to jail, along with the chica and the cab driver. The chica was put behind bars, but it took the police 8 hours to process and release the friends.

One day when we were in our house in Mazatlan, I heard a crash, tinkling of broken glass - all the sounds of an accident. I went out to check it out & lo & behold, a car had struck our parked car! Our neighbor in his tienda, after listening to some of the conversations between the "agent" of the driver & the driver....said to us "you have a problem"! What?!? Our agent came to the house & off we all went to the police station on the other side of town. It seems the driver of the other car was working at the time for her father & they had let their insurance expire the month before. They impounded both cars, diagramed the accident using carbon papers in between & after about 5 hrs. we were allowed to go. They were going to hold the young lady but her father or husband or someone came to her rescue & she was allowed to leave. Afterwards, we received a number of calls from the family, begging us to not get the insurance company involved - too late- & they promised to make good on the repairs. Our car was totally repaired with parts having to be flown in from the US.....but we never did hear how it turned out for the other party.

Shortly before I gave up driving last year, I was doing my favorite driving trick -- driving with mind disengaged. In that blissful state, I ran a stop and T-boned a taxi. No damage to my truck, not even a scratch, but it pretty well messed up the taxi. Since I don't have a cell, I asked the driver to call my insurance company for me. I guess one might opine that it takes a lot of gall to ask the person you just knocked off the road to use his phone to call your agent. It worked. The driver was super nice. Soon his father, who owns the taxi, arrived. Then my keeper, Enrique, arrived, and the crash scene turned into old home week as the owner and Enrique are old friends.

The cops came. The jefe asked me how it happened. I said "Soy estúpido." He laughed, took my license and asked no more questions. The adjuster was late coming, so we all went to the police station. One of the cops rode with me because I was unsure were we were going. Nice guy who spoke English. Because the adjusted had not come, the police were preparing to impound my truck. In my town, they keep the vehicle, not the driver. Just in time, the adjuster arrived and took care of everything. The owner said my smack was the sixth time the taxi had been T-boned. Unreal!

I was worried about what this claim would do it my rate at renewal time. In the USA, the rate would surely have gone up. Not here. When I renewed, there was no rate increase, in fact, the rate went down by almost 500 pesos. Odd.

When I renewed, there was no rate increase, in fact, the rate went down by almost 500 pesos.

Must have been back when you had the uncanny resemblance to Santa Claus. T-boning a taxi? Meh...it's not like you ran over grandma with a reindeer :-)
