So glad to find this site

Hello everyone!

I am so glad to have found this site. I have been living in Mexico near Monterrey for two years now and have very little contact with Americans here. It is nice to just read all the info you all have shared. I have dual citizenship here because my Mom is from here. She lives in Michigan, where I am originally from. I am searching out info about business requirements and regs here in Mexico and in two years I am finally getting closer to understanding. I still do not really understand how the dual citizenship works for me as especially when I cross the border. If I cross with my American passport, I have to get a visitors permit to be here which cost about $22 for 180 days. But I have my Mexican papers. I get stopped at the checkpoint and they ask how I came through the border and I show passport, then they ask for permit and I show them my Mexican voters card and they ask me for a Mexican passport. It is crazy. I ask, "when am I Mexican?". I really don´t know if I should just spend the $1300 pesos to get a Mexican passport too.

Well I am just sounding off a bit as I am excited to share with you all and just glad to have found some kindred spirits.

Welcome to Mexconnect. I hope you have a good time here.

By all means, get a Mexican passport. It will save you a lot of trouble crossing the border.

The dual citizenship rules are simple: you are a citizen of the country you are in at the moment.

When you cross into the USA, you should use your USA passport. When you cross into México, you should use your Mexican passport.

I am a dual (U.S. - Canadian) citizen and usually follow the rule you suggest when traveling - I enter the U.S.with my U.S. passport, and enter Canada with my Canadian one.

Evidently, the U.S. doesn't like this - in fact, I lost my U.S. citizenship for a while some years ago, until a U.S. Supreme Court decision required the U.S. Consulate to return my passport. According to one of their publications, I should always travel on the U.S. passport, wherever I go. (This, of course, is supposed to rule out trips to Cuba, quite routine for Canadians.)

On the other hand, although I was in Canada all that time, I - quite legally - voted in the last U.S. presidential election.
