Shipping of Medications?

Can't Post | Private Reply
Hola all,

I am wondering about a foreseeable problem with one of my medications and thought I would throw this out there for you. I am considering starting to take an injectable medication that would only come in 30 days supplies. This medication is not available in Mexico (at least from my searching so far) - so I would have to have it sent every 30 days. Any thoughts on this? Would the border let it through? My plan once in SMA is to go to the local Mailbox place and set up a US address for first class mail. Could it be sent to me there?

Just thinking ahead and wondered if this would be a problem!

Muchas Gracias,

Mexigrl

I tale Avonex IM weekly for IM multiple sclerosiis. Insunce companieie Care Marl can save a few bucks on 9o day scripts. They will make FedEx on a vaction extension. Then you enlist tourists and clever board friends. Getting drugs across the border is not a problem!

Yes, you can open an account with a mail service in SMA such as Border Crossings. Your meds will be brought down from their Laredo, Texas mail office usually within about 2 weeks of them having been mailed from the supplier. On average, the shipping cost will be about $20. There is one other option a friend of mine uses. She has her meds sent to her in care of the US Consulate office here in San Miguel. The advantage is that apparently the packages aren't opened as they are when passing through the Aduana.

Brian - The idea on the consulate sounds interesting - Do you know if your friend needed special permissions or anything?

ZZ - I would be shipping Copaxone, which I know you can't get in Mexico. I have to do more research to find out about refrigeration and how long it can go. I have a friend in Cancun who has MS and takes Avonex by prescription from his neuro here. I don't know if buying it in Mexico would save you but as far as I can tell it is available.

Gracias!

In the case of Avonex, it is OK without refrigeration for 1 week. If it is FedExed from the US, and I like the idea of a diplomatic pouch, it can get to Mexico in 24 hours to five days. It is packed with refigeratant, which i suspect wouldn't hold up on a pallete in the sun in customs. I like the notion of the consul receiving!
