Renewal of Car Permits at Airports?

Has anyone tried to renew their car permits at the nearest Airport Aduana? This was brought up to me the other day and I was just wondering how that was done. Can anyone enlighten me? It makes some good sense if this is a correct possibility.

Cancun Airport Aduana personnel said no. Merida Airport Aduana said no. We've gotten comments on our website from other parts of Mexico where their local airport's Aduana personnel also said no. All of these "no's" were in the last 4 months.

Aduana at the Mexico City airport knew absolutely nothing about car permits. I "finally" found the place in Mexico City to renew my permit and got it renewed in a few minutes with no problems.

Here is a reprint of my earlier post (June 2011) detailing my experience in renewing my vehicle permit in Mexico City.

I just finished renewing my vehicle permit today in Mexico City after renewing my visa "no immigrante" for the 2nd. time last week. Thanks to Ric Hoffman for sending me a pdf. I could use for submission of "Anexo 2. The address for renewal at Aduana was given as Hidalgo 77, Col. Guerrero. Like some others I had not not renewed my vehicle permit after renewing my visa last year.

First, take public transportation since traffic is quite heavy and parking is difficult to find. The address of Hidaldo 77 is only semi-correct. They will direct you around the corner to the Banjercito Office at Paseo de la Reforma #37. You enter the courtyard and go to the right to the windows on the left where you are checked-in. They will take your visa and give you a electronic entry card. Go through the turnstiles and proceed straight through the building. The 2nd set of escalators will take you to Modulo IV Piso 1 (2nd floor for most of us). At the top,go to your right. There are glass doors on the left that will take you into the correct office located on the right.

The office has several desks with 3-4 women working. I saw Fernanda Hernandez. She reviewed my Anexo 2 (2 copies), the original and copy of my vehicle permit, and a copy of my visa. She wanted to know how I originally paid for the permit. She left the office for 2-3 minutes, came back, stamped and signed 1 copy of my Anexo 2, gave it to me and off I went.

Some points. I did not renew my permit after the first year because I did not know what to do. I did not pay an actual deposit when I entered Mexico. Banjercito in Nuevo Laredo only took an imprint of my card. I was never charged. The credit card I used has been cancelled for over a year. The office did not ask me anything or require any additional financial information. Total time in the office was less than 10 minutes. The staff were very polite, efficient and helpful. Time to find the correct building and ask my way to the correct place - 20 minutes.

Hello fordmexico,

Great directions, thank you for this information. I have but a few other questions.

1. What papers besides the form did you take with you. . . . ie the blue car permit where the original is taken off and pasted to your windshield, a reciept?

2. Your New FM2 needed?

3. Any passport or other documents needed such as insurance, drivers license, etc?

4. If you were driving into Mexico City where would you park your car and take a bus from? . . . . . or is it maybe better to go by bus all the way from say Queretaro to the Mexico City bus station and take a taxi from there?

6. Do you happen to remember the office hours of operation during the week?

1. You will need the Anexo (2 copies), the original "Permiso De Importacion Temporal de Vehiculos" (Its blue) and a copy to give to them, the receipt where you paid for the permit (and the deposit if you actually paid for one), a copy of your renewed visa (they will take your actual visa when you enter the building).

2. A copy of your renewed visa is necessary. They will take your actual visa and give you an electronic building pass when you enter the building.

3.You will not need your vehicle insurance papers, passport or drivers license. I had copies of them just in case as you never know when they might want something.

4. There is no convenient parking in the area. I live in Tlanepanta de Baz and took Avenida Insurgentes south to a SuperWalmart and used its lot for 3 pesos and then took a taxi for 30 pesos. The area is very busy with very heavy car,tzxi, pasero and bus traffic.Taking a bus and then a taxi would be easier.

Another possibility is to take the Metro once you arrive in the D.F. I believe the Hidalgo station was quite near. Check a Metro Map for sure!!

By car I would follow the autopistas south to the Anillo Periferico and then take the Reforma exit towards the Zocalo.

There are a bunch of parking lots that are near the American Embassy, Sheraton Maria Isabel and the Statue of Independence-The Angel on your left on Avenida Reforma. I typically use the underground parking at the Sheraton for about $60 pesos/hour and then grab a regular taxi. It should cost about 50-70 pesos to go to Aduana. The Banjercito/Aduana complex is not too far from the Zocalo.

5.Ubicación: Av. Hidalgo 77, Módulo IV, planta baja, Colonia Guerrero, Delegación Cuauhtémoc, México, Distrito Federal.
Horario de atención: de lunes a viernes de 09:00 a 15:00 y de 16:00 a 18:00 horas.

For those of us who do not know an Anexo from a hole in the ground could you help us out with a little explanation pls, thanks.

BTW has anyone had any success in mailing the forms to that address?

Anexo 2 is the actual form that you use to request an extension of your vehicle permit from Aduana. You complete the form and Aduana with the basic vehicle info and Aduana will approve it by stamping your copy. You would then show the approved Anexo 2 to any official that questions you about whether you can use your vehicle after the original Permiso has expired.

As a note I have had the opportunity to show the Anexo twice in the last month to the police. Local , Federal and State police have been setting up road checks (CONAGO) for several weeks in the D.F and Estado de Mexico as a way of finding stolen vehicles and people wanted by them. Missing plates is one of the criteria that will get you checked. Since my Michigan registered vehicle has only a rear plate it has caused me to be checked a couple of times lately.

Ric Hoffman was kind enough to e-mail a copy for me to use. I would also be happy to e-mail a copy of the document.

Thanks very much for the clarification, it was the anexo "2" that had me confused. I have a copy of the letter requesting the extension.

Hi fordmexico,

Again thanks for the information regarding the car permit renewal. In Querétaro this permit can indeed be extended for your Rentista FM2 without any problem at all. You were right about the long walk . . . . . but I didn’t have to take it. I just knocked on my "wooden" leg and they granted me a permit to drive up to the office. I thought my goose was cooked when I remembered at the last minute I did not have my cargo trailer with me as it was at home in Galindo. I was lucky to have a copies of both titles and the original titles of the Tahoe and the trailer with me and that was all they needed. It all took less than five minutes and they guy was very, very polite and just a nice Federal Government Ambassador of the real Mexican culture that I have come to love in this state. He even provided the forms we needed to use.

I sure am happy I didn't have to make that walk! The Aduana is located on Campo Military Road and it is off February 5 road on the way to Celaya if you are on the autopista coming from the south.

Thanks again fordmexico, I sure didn't want to drive to C.D. Mexico to do this.

Down here on the Pacific (Barra de Navidad) the Aduana at the Port of Manzanillo was the nearest place for me.

Plenty of parking, not so much seating. Helpful and professional staff, no English spoken that I heard.

A bit of a surprise, the young man helping me seemed to think it would be longer than 15 days by the time Banjercito was notified. He mentioned that Aduana sends the documents to their HQ in Mexico via regular mail, and then there is HQ processing, etc. I was there one day before my temporary permit expired, he told me I should have been there 5 days before it expired. I could have misunderstood him but I don't thin so.

I was wondering if Banjercito ever acknowledges to the applicants, who have made this submission with $ deposit under the new rules, that they have received the required information and that the deposit is secured.

Well that is good information to have about the five day period. I got my extension today and the permit expires on the 28th, this ought to be interesting! Altogether that makes five days. No one mentioned any such dates to me. I hope Rolly is peeking at all this information for updates on his blog about renewing car permits in Mexico.

In Queretaro, it is also the "Port of Entry in Queretaro". They have several sets of train tracks into the place and very well guarded. It is located right next to, or maybe even part of a very large military base. No waiting at all. My wife and I were the only ones there! In and out in a total of 15 minutes!

The stinkers keep moving the goal posts. At first they said within 15 days after the visa's expiration date. Then they said not later than that date. Now they say some days before the date.

My advice is to renew your visa at the earliest possible date, and then fire off the documents to aduana as soon as you get your new card.

Hi Rolly,

The man at the Aduana Office in Queretaro renewed my car permit aftr getting my new FM2 and it was immediately put into the system computer. I don't understand how this was not also done for the other poster who said that it would take five days to be reregistered. Maybe only for the time for the Police Computers to pick up on it as they may have a different system? Who knows? I would think the official stamp by Aduana no matter where it was stamped would take precedence.
