Recycling

There is no recycling where I live, but I have found that my gardener will take newspapers, cardboard, plastic bags, plastic bottles and aluminum cans. He knows where to sell them, so it provides a little extra cash for him and it lessens the amount of trash I send to landfills. Of course, the trash colectors also check everything for valuables, but I would rather help my gardener.

This would be way more helpful if we knew where you were located.
If your gardener knows where to sell the things, there IS recycling. Taking things to a scrap yard is recycling, too.

I live in the state of Guanajuato--where there is no "official" recycling program. My point is that probably everyone everywhere in Mexico knows someone who can dispose of such things--at a profit.

My husband recycles everything he can. He takes plastic bottles and glass to a recycling business, metal to the scrap yard, cardboard to the grocery store where it goes in their bailer to be recycled. He doesn't get any money for the glass or cardboard, but they do get recycled. The scrap metal adds up quickly.
They pick out the returnable bottles and take them to a local tienda for the deposit.
The money he and his friend make with this are used to buy things for Cruz Roja and Proteccion Civil.

I refer to his pick-up truck as the Sanford & Son truck.

I just figure I do the pependores a favor, and sort out the good stuff when I throw it out. They get first dibs on any recyclables, then any of the guys who collect cans or bottles or papers who sometimes show up.

In some neighborhoods (at least in DF and a few other places I've lived), junk men would still comb the streets (often with a pony cart) for larger recyclable items.
