In cultures where families are well connected by affection and support, in many cases, people never have to pay a mortgage and never have to pay rent. They either have saved money to pay cash for the house or the house has been passed down through the generations or there are three generations living under the same roof (grand-parents, parents, children). They also pay with cash and not credit cards and don't give any extra money to banks. In many cases, they use government services, such as the post office to retrieve their pensions. This is how they can live on 9,000 pesos a month and not have to make Tortillas. In addition, they may also barter and trade for items and in general, they don't have to pay high prices for household goods, such as furniture, appliances, etc. Two families (usually related) may even share a car.
