Hey Rolly,

I though I would direct this question twards you since well, I thought you might have a good answer for me:)

OK...I guess this is more than one question:(

Does Telmex Prodigy have a good internet backbone to the USA?

Are they pretty reliable?

Do they use proxies? ( I do video conferencing and proxies are bad for me)

Will they let me use my own ADSL modem with thier service or do they make me use thiers?

Is there a fast alternative to Telmex (fast upload, NOT download) like say cable internet in the Cancun area (I guess you cant answer that one Rolly since you live in northern MX:)

OK sorry to bug you all:)

thanks:)

Are they pretty reliable? My ISP drops me off once in a while. It is also very slow when the school kids hit the internet cafes in the afternoon. But it is as good or better than my AOL service was in Los Angeles.

Do they use proxies? ( I do video conferencing and proxies are bad for me) I don't know.

Will they let me use my own ADSL modem with thier service or do they make me use thiers? I don't know. I use a dial-up. I'm too far out to have DSL.

I personally do not recommend Prodigy.........

.........Unless it's Prodigy Infinitum. It is their high speed DSL. However, it is not cheap. I think it is between $55 and $65 (U.S.) a month. I believe that the modem you need to buy from them costs around $300 (U.S.).

Regular Prodigy I do not recommend at all. I used them in Monterrey and had frequent disconnects, lots of busy signals when trying to connect, etc. I switched over to Terra and I am a lot happier with their service. Plus, if they are located in your town, at a reasonable cost, a techician can come over if you have any problems. This service is free when you are installing Terra service. With Prodigy, you have to call their 800 number in Mexico City to install and if you have any problems with their service, you have to try to resolve all of them over the phone.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you Rolly=)

I will be getting the Prodigy Infintium for i think 89.00$ UDS per month it will be 512/256 I belive. I am also thinking of getting cable broadband simultaniously in case Telmex goes out for a few days ect...also, so I can call the US cheaply via vonage or a similar service while im online. I was wondering if Prodigy would let me use my modem is an ADSL modem...or do I have to purchase thiers...My major question is does Prodigy Infintuim use proxies and do they have a good internet backbone to the USA?OH~ One more thing....can any telephone line support Infintium or will I have to have my current line converted or somethin? Thanks again

PS please forgive me if my finace has recently asked the same questions..im not sure what her screename is or I would have checked..thanks=)

Prodigy Infinitum

The price that you quoted does not include the IVA, which is 15%. So, what you're looking at is over $102 a month that you will have to pay.

Prodigy Infinitum has a less powerful speed, which is 256/128, which the few people that I've talked to seem to be quite happy with (one of them has an internet cafe in Monterrey). It costs about $49 a month plus IVA, which would bring it up to a little over $56 a month, which is a lot more reasonable that the more powerful speed that you mentioned. You will probably find that the more powerful speed is not worth the extra $46 a month, especially for a single computer. I tried the 256/128 service at the internet cafe that I mentioned, and it was noticebly faster than the regular 56K service.

You will have to call tech support at Prodigy at their 800 number and ask them if they will let you use your modem. (By the way, do you speak Spanish?) If they do allow you to use it and if there are any problems, they will probably blame your modem rather than the service.

As far as I can tell from the Prodigy web site, you would not have to change your telephone line.

From what I know about Prodigy Infinitum, it is dependable enough that you would not need to have a back-up service.

I hope this helps!
