Practicing medicine in Mexico

Can't Post |
I am a family physician in California considering moving to either the Lake Chapala area or San Miguel de Allende. I wonder if it is possible to practice medicine part time in a outpatient clinic setting in Mexico. I imagine many of the expats who have moved to these areas would like to have an American doctor. Any retired doctors down there with knowledge about this situation?

Hi murray
I think you have it wrong. Medical care in this area is much better than most areas in the US or Canada. Plenty of docs to choose from. I can see a wonderful doc for $10 - $15. He/she will spend time with me, speak English, and understand my concerns. Doesn't rush me out of the office, have to see 100 patients per day or ask about my insurance prior to talking to me. It would be great if you would like to join docs without borders or donate your time to take care of poor Mexicans. No need for US docs or dentists here for us gringos. I think most of us are happy as can be with our Mexican medical care.. There may be a few exceptions

Does anyone know how nurse practitioners work in Mexico? I presently live in New Mexico where I have my own family practice. My husband is ready to retire but I'm not. I want to stay busy. I want to give good care to patients not get rich.

Just as a "for instance" here in Mazatlan, I went to a nose, throat, ear specialist who was trained in Spain. He speaks a little English but I speak pretty good Spanish so it's not a problem. His office is clean and there is no need to make an appointment. I've seen him twice. He talks to me, works on my ear and spends about 30 minutes. He solves the problem. Each visit was 250 pesos. Also, my significant other went to a woman gynocologist for a pap smear. Cost: 270 pesos. Mamograms are about 500 pesos. There are some very good bargains. A lot of doctors will make house calls. It could be a very fulfilling way to work.

Doctors often charge $10-15, with the best specialists in San Miguel charging $40 for a full hour, no charge for the quick visits to get test results or prescriptions. Friends in relationships with Mexican doctors complain that doctors are not as well respected generally, they don't get to work regular hours, they are called in at all hours even if they are not on call, and they certainly don't make the money U.S. doctors do. I've had excellent care from Mexican doctors in SMA--mine graduated from Vanderbilt, trained at Mt. Sinai, and is board certified, a fellow and a diplomate in internal medicine, the highest you can get. He gets his latest info on the net, exchanges info and things like colonoscopy images via the net with consultants, and I can get in to see him usually within a few hours the same day. He calls me with test results immediately, just like the idealized doctors of U.S. commercials. There are plenty of doctors in SMA. Lots of gringos still go back to the states for serious stuff, but many get excellent care from local hospitals, particularly Angeles Hospital in Queretaro, city of a million.

I wonder about your getting a work permit for Mexico, since you'd be taking a job a Mexican can do. Check it out elsewhere on MexConnect.

A brand new Los Angeles hospital will be opening in Leon soon--about 1.5 hours away from SMA. It will supposedly be the most up-to-date in this part of Mexico.
