Partner dies=car problem

Can't Post | Private Reply
The partner of a neighbour here at Lake Chapala died recently. They had each brought a car into Mexico on FM3s. The surviving partner is unsure what to do next. I guess he somehow has to get the car brought in my the deceased partner transferred into his name somewhere (the US or Mexcio?). Then he has to get the temporary import of that car changed to his name-but how? Then he has to nationalize one of the cars-again how? The complications seem insurtmountable but it must happen fairly often so what have others done? Is it a good idea to get a company or lawyer to handle all this?

The ownership of the car will be determined by the man's will.
After probate, he can decide what to do next.

The US will leaves the car to the partner. Probate in the US will take a long time, meantime the car is being used in Mexico. It seems like the car papers for Mexico will be in limbo for quite awhile-maybe he shouldn't be driving it until he has it nationalized?

He absolutely should not be driving it.
Nationalizing the car is probably a pipe dream -- not likely to happen.

Oops, my neighbours is a bit distraught and isn't on top of things. I went over and got him to dig out the title/registration of the car that the now deceased had brought into Mexico and it is in both names. So all he has to be concerned with now is is getting the name on the import papers switched and then he is determined that he will get it nationalized. Does he have to go to the border for that or can he get a local lawyer/facilator to do that?
