Ok another question

Can't Post |
Just as I think I have all the bases covered planning a move to Mexico. Another question comes up.

Lets say I bring a car from the U.S. to Mexico. I have been looking into insurance. A lot of companies state that you could have your car in Mexico only for a limited time say for example 4 months out of the year. So if you have an accident and have been in Mexico more then the company might have an out.

The company I am looking at does not stipulate how long you can be in Mexico with the car so there are no time limits.

The following are conditions for getting car insurance for an american with a car that is not nationalized.

1 registard in the U.S.

2 Cannot be a Mexican national

3 have a U.S. drivers license.

Now the question. Lets say I have an fm3 and retired. My registration expires and of course I am not going back to the states to registar. The car is registared in N.Y. So reg expires how does it effect my insurance? The company says it will not be a problem. Many Americans do this.

You cannot get resident insurance for the car since the car is not nationalized so if the first case presents a problem you are in a catch 22.

Hope someone can answer this for me.

"So reg expires how does it effect my insurance?" Some insurance companies do require that your registration be current, others do not. Check carefully.

My registration expired a long time ago, but my company doesn't care. They also cover me for 365 days in Mexico. When I first came here, I had a policy I bought in California that was valid for a year, but buried in the fine print was a clause that said it was valid only for a total exposure time of 30 days in Mexico. I'm glad to see that you are already wise to that ploy.

Be sure the policy includes bail bond and legal aid.

My company is ING Commerical America www.ing-commericalamerica.com

Lewis and Lewis has a good reputation.

This subject has been discussed a lot on MXC. Do a search of the posts to find many other insurance companies -- some much cheaper than mine.

I went to the website of your company. One question. under things needed it says license plate vin number and drivers license for each driver. It mentions nothing of a up to date registration. But how do you know it is not required unless you asked? Wouldn't it state somewhere if it was required or not?

I read my policy carefully. Nowhere does it talk about registration requirements. I asked my agent (a company emploee), and he told me there was no requirement for registration. They, like the Mexican authorities, want a plate number for ID.

I had Seguros Comercial America for the car insurance on my U.S. plated vehicles. My tabs were expired. I was in an accident. I received quick service and payment in full for repairs, which they arranged.
