At long last books are shipping. Those who have already placed orders should have their books shortly; or longly if coming via the Mexican postal service. Smile

Books can be ordered from Carol's website as noted above or from Amazon.com.

Yes, I know we are not supposed to use MXC to sell things, but maybe an old man will be indulged.

And, for those who haven't placed orders, now's an excellent time to do so.

Thanks, Rolly, for Everything.

Rob

P.S.: Considering we're now on the second page of this thread, Rolly, may I request that you re-post instructions for ordering from Carol's website which, as I understand it, allows you to rightfully collect the most royalties.

My copy has arrived...am anxiously waiting to see how someone in Lerdo and two someones in SMA have covered the Lake Chapala area. I haven't even looked at the Chapters to see what's in it. Need to finish a couple of ongoing books first.

Uncle Donnie's book * came out in 2003, so an update is needed. Looking forward to reading it. I certainly enjoyed Carol and Norma's Falling in Love with San Miguel book.

http://www.fallinginlovewithsanmiguel.com/ click on Bookstore - The new book is here as well.

* Head for Mexico – The Renegade Guide 2003 Don Adams www.headformexico.com - This book is hilarious!!

"am anxiously waiting to see how someone in Lerdo and two someones in SMA have covered the Lake Chapala area."

Therein lies a tale. I don't know if Rolly has ever visited this area, but Carol and Norma came to Ajijic during the three wettest days we had last year, stayed at a low end B&B, spent considerable time at the LCS, went to a couple of nice restaurants with us and went home to write what was true of this area back when it was largely composed of retired military, very conservative types. I was amazed.

I haven't read the book, and perhaps I will change my mind when I do, but I don't think you can write very accurately about an area after a three day visit with such limited contact with people. If I were writing about the area they are in love with...San Miguel....at least it would be coming from the perspective of having lived there for three years.

To their credit, Carol, Norma and Rolly well understand that you can only write authoritatively about subjects of which you have some familiarity. They do not attempt to write exhaustively about the Lake Chapala area, or really any areas of México, instead focusing on the laws, cultures and general ins and outs of being an expat in México.

They devote one chapter of the book to a brief description of 31 states and the Distrito Federal. There are two pages of description about the Lake Chapala area, which is more than most parts of México get in the book. If any area gets a really short shrift, in my opinion, it is southern México - the Yucatan, Oaxaca, Guerrero and Chiapas.

But they are very upfront that their book is not a travelogue of México. From the book:

Quote
We'll give a sweeping overview of some of the favorite expat areas in the 31 states of México, to get your imagination flowing. It is admittedly superficial and incomplete... The goal of this chapter is to open your mind to all the possibilities in México and get you started in doing further research into any areas that interest you.

What is clearly provided in the book is some excellent advice and lessons from the school of hard knocks that would be well considered by anyone contemplating a move to México. In that respect, it's a lot like what you can get by hanging around MexConnect long enough.

I doubt the book will offer much that is new to seasoned expats who have been there and done that. But for any of us who are considering such a move, it's money and time well spent.

Rolly, I am looking forward to reading the book. My opining was based on what Carol's blog said about Ajijic immediately after her visit here. This may have been altered before publication. Also note that further opining was deleted from this thread.
Good luck on the book sales. It was time for an updated version of Moving to Mexico. Things have certainly changed from the time we came in 2004 and it was suggested in the Adams book that we bring everything having an electric cord on it. lol.

Not to state the obvious here but isn't it human nature to formulate opinions, conclusions and impressions based upon their own experiences however long or short they may be? Additionally, it is also human nature to defend the spot where they have chosen to reside.

For example: having had a home in the Lakeside area for approx. eight years caused us to have one impression of the area and a much more limited impression of other parts of Mexico simply because we neglected to travel much away from there. The best result of the sale of the home was that we are able to travel more of Mexico and really get a feel for a greater part of the Country. After our most recent trip in August, we basically decided that in the future, we cared less about going to the Lakeside area and wanted to dedicate more of our time to experiencing an ever expanding view of the entire Country.

Gringal did catch me jumping to conclusions about SMA based upon a very brief visit there and her point was well taken! By her estimation, we wandered into one of the "worst of the worst" Gringo havens by going into Harry's New Orleans Cafe. Yes, it was our decision to go there but we were fulfilling a commitment made to a waiter in Zacatecas, who asked us to deliver a note and message to the owner. SMA will get future visits but now we feel like we may have a better handle on exactly what we would like to accomplish there and the manner in which to go about it.

We look forward to receiving our copy of "the BOOK" and will feel that it is worth it if we get even ONE additional piece of knowledge out of reading it!

Neil

In many ways, the work of a critic is easy. We risk very little yet enjoy a position over those who offer up their work and their selves to our judgment. We thrive on negative criticism, which is fun to write and to read. But the bitter truth we critics must face, is that in the grand scheme of things, the average piece of junk is probably more meaningful than our criticism designating it so. But there are times when a critic truly risks something, and that is in the discovery and defense of the new. The world is often unkind to new talent, new creations, the new needs friends.

Just one comment on your observation of humans being inclined to form judgments based on a short experience of the thing or person itself: Yes, we do. That's not necessarily undesirable unless the judgment was already formed prior to the experience, si? We are all critics as well. Can't help ourselves. So, what we bring to our judgments is inevitably based on who we are. I'm Californicated to the core. It would be tough for me to visit deepest Mississippi for a weekend and return with an unbiased review. Such is human nature. and the origin of the saying "don't confuse me with facts. My mind is made up."

We try, and that's the best we can do. Plus, Harry's has a good Happy Hour and I've heard raves about the oysters. lol.

There are many wonderful places in Mexico. Hope you find the one that's just right for you.

Gringal:

We were lucky (?) enough to arrive at Harry's during 2 for happy hour and you are quite correct about decent drinks! What did strike us was the predominantly male crowd that seemed to oogle every female in the place. People watching was fun and we both got the distinct impression that many of these males were hiding out from ex-wives and ex-girlfriends.

These is no question that we all assimilate "info" (in whatever form) and then tend to jump to conclusions/opinions. While I would consider myself to be very open minded, I have to fight myself to slow down the process. Too many times I have pre-judged or jumped to an early conclusion and found out later I was wrong. However, since you mention CA - you could not pay me enough to live in that State ever again!

I had the experience of living up and down the state of CA from Los Angeles to San Rafael and discovering that there are many "states" in that strip. I decided that they should divide it somewhere around San Luis Opispo

Hell was living in Riverside county; heaven was on the Big Sur Coast.....and I would gladly accept payment to live there. Je Je .

Meanwhile, I'm happy to be living right here, and can't say I miss the storms, the fires and the current fiscal disaster that has been happening since I left CA. Much more comfy in the shadow of the active Colima volcano, si?

Rolly.......may those books go flying out the door into the eager hands of all those who need them; which is everyone anticipating moving to Mexico. When we were in that state, we sure could have used that book.

The same with my book... though who is gonna pay 50+ dollars for a used book they can buy new for 24.95 is beyond me. Don't take the Amazon statistics as gospel... whatever the algorithm they use to determine sales ranking has defeated the best minds of MIT (where a couple of doctoral student actually tried to figure it out). If they shoot up, you've sold a copy or two... if they shoot way, way up, you can brag about it, but it could just be Amazon's warehouse has ordered a few more copies (itself a good sign).

It's fun though when you get rankings in the categories. For some reason, my Mexican history gets ranked among Revolutionary History among other things. A couple of times, I was supposedly better ranked than the Declaration of Independence and Edmund Burke's Reflections on the Late Revolution in France. Of course, they've been in print a lot longer.

I just look at my rankings for Mexican History, which also includes a lot of books on Mexican-American history, border travel guides and even cookbooks... and figure if I'm somewhere in the top 100 I'm having a good sales day.

Heck, Sarah Palin's book was #1, and wasn't even in print, so don't take Amazon numbers toooo seriously.
