Nationalizing a 2001 Dodge Ram 2500

Can't Post | Private Reply
Did a search on Mexconnect for nationalizing and came up empty handed. Looking for direction and advice. Our intent is to sell the truck which is now foreign plated and registered in NH, USA. We are about a 3 day drive to the border from just south of Puerto Vallarta. Chances are we will do better selling the truck here than in TX or AZ where they are a dime a dozen and rising gas prices are dampening demand.

btw, we finally got a legal service to provide the scoop on non-owner, foreign drivers. They must have he same visa status, in other words, fm 3 to fm 3, fm 2 to fm 2, etc.
Thanks all,
Isabel

"Chances are we will do better selling the truck here...."

One cannot 'sell' the foreign plated vehicle in Mexico unless you mean that someone there would "buy" it and accompany you to the border with it, turn in the temporary vehicle import paperwork and get the sticker scraped off and the car out of the computer. Then it can be re-imported by the new owner. Of course the new owner is going to have to have it registered somewhere first in their name before that can be done. Gets kinda tricky.

If you trust the 'new owner', they could drive it up to the border and turn in your paperwork. But if they fail to do so, you are on record as the person who (now) has a car in Mexico illegally and you (or whoever has their name on the paperwork) can't bring another car into Mexico.

It does get complicated trying to sell a US plated car while "in" Mexico.

A signed title or bill of sale is enought. The car does not need to be registered, but it does need to have plates.

Hi Rolly: Is there a more description on MexConnect of what the rules are on nationalizing a vehicle at Aduana in Nuevo Laredo? (There used to be a ten-year rule of some kind.) Does one need the help of a customs agent? Can one find out in advance what Aduana would charge for a particular vehicle. Is there a best time to get to Aduana to avoid crowds? I am thinking of nationalizing a 2003 Subaru Outback. I would hate to begin the paperwork at Aduana and find out that they wanted too much money, ask them to withdraw my application, and then simply take in the car as a tourist. Any ideas welcome. I can't answer all your questions, but here are two starters:

1. You must use a broker.
2. Only a Mexican citizen can nationalize a vehicle

Your customs broker can answer all the other questions and arrange to have the paperwork in the name a a citizen, and then transfer the new Mexican title to you after the deal is done.

The cost is partly dependent upon the value of the vehicle. The range I have heard is $1,500 to $2,500 dollars.

If the broker says he can do it all by mail and that you and the vehicle don't have to be there, DON'T do it. I got suckered out of $800 dollars on that kind of a deal. Be there to watch out for your interests.

What you will get from the broker is just papers. With those papers, you will get registration and plates from the Tránsito office in the place where you will be living. There will be fees for that, too.

I'm confused when you say you have to be a Mexican Citizen. I understand that when you receive an fm2 allowing you to do business, you may no longer drive a foreign plated vehicle. So if I'm not a citizen, but I have or will have an fm2 allowing me to do business, then I have to nationalize my vehicle, right?

You have to get it nationalized or get rid of it. Or keep on driving it and hope you don't get caught.
As a non-citizen, you cannot do the nationalization yourself; you have to sign the title to a Mexican citizen who can then nationalize the vehicle and sign the new Mexican title to you. As I said before, a broker usually takes care of all that.

Thanks Rolly, I will try to find a broker for the Vallarta area about 2 hours from here. So strange because customs would have let me pay the tax on my pop up trailer at the border so that it would have been nationalized and not on my fm3. Maybe trailers are different, I understand there may be different age rules for trucks than cars as well, we shall see.

Nationalization can only be down at the border. You have to go to Nuevo Laredo.

Rolly, A poster on a related thread not too long back wrote that he nationalized his vehicle at the Guadalajara Airport Aduana office. Now that I think about it, it might have been on a different forum.

If one is in the PV area, wouldn't Nogales be closer?

Not all border crossings are set up for nationalizing.
Nuevo Laredo is the one I know for sure.

Nogales, also. That said, it seems to be much more difficult now at any location, than it used to be.

Now I am very confused! I had an FM3 and have switched to the FM2. Are you saying I can't have my one foreign plated vehicle?

Also, I have it on good authority that a car can be nationalized locally if you sell it to a citizen. The paper work would have to be turned in at the border and a fine would have to be paid to get the vehicle cleared from the foreigner's name. I'm in the process of doing this right now so I can bring in a newer truck.

With an FM2, you can own a foreign plated vehicle so long as your FM2 says Rentista. If it says anything else, you cannot have a foreign-plated vehicle.

a fine would have to be paid
It's not a fine, it's a tax.

Thanks Rolly,

Then I, a rentista, can own a foreign plated truck but my friend who is here on a work visa cannot? She has been stopped but the Federales never said anything about it.

Correct, if she has an FM2. If she has an FM3 working, she can still have a foreign vehicle.
The restriction applies only to FM2 folks.
