NOB Placas

I am sure someone else has had the unfortunate loss of a license plate. My front California plate is gone. I assume it was stolen as the mounting screws are also gone. I am currently living in Mexico with an FM2. My car is no longer on the DMV list in California as I canceled the registration when I brought the car to Mexico. I am concerned that I will be stopped for no front plate again and again and would like to know what is the proper proceedure in regard to the plate loss. Sticker still on the windshield, copies of permit and FM3 in glove compartment. I know that I can just legalize the car in my Mexican wife's name, but I was hoping to slide on that for another year when I apply for immigrado status. Any help and ideas will be appreciated.

Coming from the State of New Mexico, who only issues a rear plate - it was recommended to us a number of years ago by a former New Mexico resident to find a front plate to eliminate potential problems. I purchased a "Route 66" souvenir plate and that seems to satisfy any curiosity about a lack of front plate. A friend who lives in Chapala lost his moto plate from Alberta, Canada and happened to have a photo of the plate. He had an enterprising artist in Chapala create a new one for him and it has satisfied the authorities. Our plates are now affixed with one way screws to prevent such an event.

As far as I know it's a non-issue in Mexico. Many states NOB have only one plate, on the rear of the vehicle. If it will make you feel better put a plate on the front with your favorite team or university. You can even buy one that resembles the Mexican flag. Have a beer and relax.

It is not a non-issue. My front California plate came off, and I procrastinated putting it back.
I was stopped in Torreón and in Manzanillo with only a warning.
I got stopped here in Lerdo by a cop spoke English and knew that CA had front plates.
It cost me $50 pesos. So I put the plate back on.
