Moving across the border

When you're doing the "lock, stock and barrel" Does everything have to go through at one time, or can you make more than one trip?

If you are moving things with a menaje de casa, everything on the menaje must go in one trip. If you are moving things not on a menaje, you can make as many trips as you wish.

For more details, go here: http://rollybrook.com/...o_move_to_mexico.htm

Good luck.

I'm watching for the answer to this one too. Altho I will only be hauling two horses, not 15 like Kip.

Kip,

Will you have horse property in Mexico? Board? Are you going to Ajijic area? When is your ETA? Ours is a ways off yet, but I'd like to learn about hauling horses in, and having them there. I gather the two that you take will be for pleasure riding? Trail? Western? Or English, arena? Would you stay in touch with me about having your horses there? Facilities, type of hay, vets, shoes, riding areas, etc.
Hope someone answers your question re hauling.

Happy trails.

Kip. With 15 horses how do you give up 13 and only take two. I know that is a more practical solution, but it can't be easy. Well it's midnight here and a little later to the east. If any of you are still up, have a good night.

can't say I "enjoyed" reading rolly's description...but it certainly WAS informative. :)

not sure if the link to a sample menaje is to rolly's, but there's a lot of info at www.newbeginningsmexico.com

What I'm hoping to do is to start schlepping stuff by air say, 6-12 months prior to THE move. Problem will be finding cheap storage. Does anybody know how much the mini-storage places charge?

The next plan is to leave stuff (some already packed in suitcases) and tell family and friends that the cost of visiting me is to bring a suitcase.

Any pitfalls to this? If it's used stuff might there be problems in aduana?

I'd also like to TRY and save up enough vacation time to have a month or so to do a drive from Miami to Lakeside and take some stuff in the van (oops that's another thread!). If I have some plates and breakables, will they shout "menaje" at me and get nasty?

Take a folding card table, a nice table clothe and some candles and tell them that your dream is to "dine in style" on a deserted Mexican beach. At first I had typed A desserted Mexican beach, which is an entirely different vision,..beautiful white sand,.with tables loaded with beautiful yummy carb filled delectables. Whipped cream piled to the sky, caramel everything and chocolate for miles,.. sorry, lost control there , we're on Atkins at the moment....

O. Kkkk. ...Let's see will we board or buy horse property, I don't know. We'll be checking things out in Nov. Definitely for pleasure. We have hunter jumpers but we're bringing , (I hope) our Tennessee Walkers, and yes indeedy they are a pleasure. I doubt if there's anywhere to show there, and I really am burned out with that, but hey now, show off? Oh yeah my white stallion really gets into that. We used to ride western but you know those damn western saddles are so heavy, and after I got used to the english saddle it's just more comfortable for me and a hell of a lot easier to throw up. Now when I'm starting a youngster I do go back to my old western saddle. Snowy River has his whole "silver set". We haven't used it a lot lately but it's a great conversation piece in the living room. And yes the sucker weighs a ton.

We'll check out all of the horsey things, whoops, maybe I shouldn't use that word. Tuatha made it sound like a four letter word, although to my count there are six.

Pete, it tears my heart out. Almost all of them I've delivered. But you folks out there who have never had horses just don't understand the work involved. Winter is the worst. Feeding in a snow or rainstorm with the mud sucking your boots off and the nasty stuff squishing up through your socks, trying to break ice in the lake to get them water only to find air underneath and then be forced to haul water to them. Having your hands freeze to the stall latches because you forgot you'd just hauled water. I know the cold part will be missing in Ajijic, but they're like children. They get into stuff, they get hurt they need their feet taken care of and their shots and their wormings, And if you have any in the barn,.(we have four,...at the moment) They have to be fed and watered and have their stalls cleaned twice a day. Well cleaned once a day. Not to mention the apples to be divvied up, the wither, bellies and tails to be scratched as well as kisses and loves all round. But there is no day off. Just our hay bill last year to take us through the winter was $7,000. That doesn't even touch the grain, the shavings, vaccines, the horse shoer (they all have to be trimmed every six weeks, wormed every couple of months, the vet bills,... the hospital bills, I had my face kicked in ten years ago, a total accident, no hard feelings. Take a breath. Besides these are all horses that should be on the jumping circuit winning for some Daddy's little darling, not wasted as yard art in Mexico.

I know, much more information than you needed.

Check with the airline that you will be flying on. I have had very good luck shipping boxes via Cargo on Alaska Air into Mazatlan. Though it involves paperwork and copies of passport, airline tickets etc, and time in the Aduana house, but I haven't had to pay any duty at all. I get charged a dollar a pound and even dishes made it in one piece. Bear in mind that this has to be USED personal goods to be exempt. I just kept a vague list of what was in the boxes, they had a little inspection in front of me (you have to be present with your passport to obtain your goods, by the way) re-taped the boxes and sent me on my way. (This does not happen all on the same day or the day of your flight by the way, but I was very impressed) Hope this helps.

Hi Sandy,

Go back to the home page and in the box titled "forums search" type in "storage". Specific info (sometimes contradictory) will be there.

thanks,Don, did that.

gosh, they're saying $35 for a 5x5x5 FOOT storage area. I paid about $50 in Miami for chrissakes and that's a tiny space. and someone said it used to be $60 in Ajijic.
