Moving Household & Children eek

Can't Post |
I've been talking to the consulate representative in Indianapolis, but he confuses me! Basically what we are doing is this: my common law husband (temporary USA resident card, he's Mexican) and I (American citizen) are moving our household and 3 children to Saltillo, Coahuila at the end of June.

I understand the menaje and its nearly completed. What I am not clear on are these things:

Do I need a passport?
Do I need an FMT or an FM3? (I plan to live in MX permanently)
Do I go in with only my passport then apply for FMT/FM3 inside MX?
The consulate officer said the children could be registered in IN as dual citizens, do they still need passports (or would it just be a good idea)?

Any help is appreciated. I just want everything that is possible to done before we reach the border. I eventually want to have permanent residency status and want to do everything possible now instead of later.

1. Legally marry your common-law husband. The marriage certificate will become an invaluable piece of documentation.

2. Yes, you’ll need a passport. Your children will need passports, too.

3. The FMT is a tourist card with a maximum duration of 180 days. It cannot be renewed. To obtain another tourist card, you’ll need to exit the country and re-enter.

4. You’ll need an FM-3, which is renewable annually.

5. The menaje de casa can only be granted to returning Mexican nationals or to FM-3 holders.

6. You can enter Mexico under an FMT, and apply for the FM-3 in-country, or you can apply for the FM-3 at the Mexican Consulate. The menaje de casa can be granted only at the Mexican Consulate.

7. Yes, you should register the children’s births at the Mexican Consulate.

Thanks so much! I know the officer was trying to be as helpful as possible, but every question he answered was like this "yes you can do it that way but you can do this too, you have the choice of this or this if you do this" etc. He just got me very confused.
