Motorcycles in Mexico

This is probably a dumb question, but are the laws about bringing a car into Mexico the same for bringing in a motorcycle?

Yes, unless you bring the motorcycle in a truck or on a trailer; then they are different.

Just different as far as entry, or different in the licensing, vehicle taxes, etc?

Assuming that you are bringing it in by truck or trailer, the permit for the motorcycle is PART of the permit for the truck or the vehicle/trailer combo, so MUST leave México when the hauling or towing vehicle leaves México. Just as with the hauling vehicle, there are NO taxes, additional licensing, or anything else required. As long as you have a valid visa, the hauling or towing vehicle and the motorcycle or motorcycle/trailer combo can remain in México with nothing else to do to keep it here.

I just recently took my motorcycle for vacation to Guanjuato Mexico and carried it as cargo in the back of my truck. I had to get a permit for the truck and another for the motorcycle. Both could not be in the same name. I added my wifes name to the regsitration on the truck and carried our marriage license. This information was told to me at the Mexico Consulate office in Houston. I paid and recieved the permits prior to arriving the border.

I may be mistaken, but it depends on what size motorcycle in terms of engine CC's. If the bike is meant for the street, it must have a separate permit. If its off-road, then no. The sticker must be displayed on the vehicle, so how could the truck permit be shown while riding the bike? When we passed through immigration at the second checkpoint, the officer checked the permit number and matched it with the VIN number on the frame, as well as the truck. I had to question three insurance companies to make sure the bike was covered for claims while the bike was in the truck. Two indicated that the bike was only covered while being driven on the road. One indicated that they were no longer covering trucks and SUV's in the northern territory crossing from Texas.

rvcycleguy, When getting the stickers via the Internet before going to the border, what you did is absolutely correct. AND FYI, assuming that the person whose name is on the cycle sticker has or gets an FM3 or FM2, the cycle CAN be left in México.

There is no restriction as per the cc displacement of the motorcycle nor is there for whether it is for off-road or on-road use, UNLESS it is an untittled, unregistered dirt (¿racing?) motorcycle. Then you couldn't get the sticker via the Internet and would have to import it on the temporary importation permit for the hauling or towing vehicle. If that was the case, it could NOT be left in México when that vehicle leaves.

I could easily be mistaken about the insurance situation, as it has been several years since I checked, but AAA always had truck insurance, for an extra charge, that would cover cargo. You might check with them.

... not sure how big a bike, but looking at the price of bikes... or at least the 150cc Italika scooters at Wallyworld in Toluca ... I'd buy one there.. only 11,000 pesos or just under a $1grand.... here in Canada they are closer to $5grand and they go fast enough to kill me if I'm not careful. ...then again if your talking a fancy Goldwing or big Harley.. all bets are off
