More HIdden Costs of Living in Mexico

For more than 20 years my husband and I did remodeling and renovations of houses in Houston. Even at the best contractors' price for interior paint we still paid from $35 to $40 for five gallons. Hubby, always the bargain hunter, was thrilled when he found interior paint here for 150 pesos, or less than $15 a five! He and our daughter (18 yrs) voluntered to paint my living-dining-computer room. I said "YES" and told them I wanted the color Melon, a light orange sherbert, for the walls.

I went to bed and they stayed up all night painting. When I woke up the next morning, they were so proud of themselves. And my walls were the most ungodly shade of bright, neon, fluorescent agua, I needed to put on my sun shades! It looks like the bottom of a swimming pool! When I recovered somewhat from my shock, I asked why they had not painted it melon, as I had specified.

Well, they explained proudly, the melon was 150 pesos a five while the sky blue they purchased was only 80 pesos (about $7.00 US). So I have walls that do not match my bric-a-brac, my curtain, my throw covers, my sofa cushions, my dishes, my napkins . . . .etc.

What am I going to do? Well, I am going on a serious buying binge and get all new things to match my violent aqua walls. This will cost Hubby lots more than he saved by buying the cheap stuff on sale.

We have our ceilings painted the same way, for the same reason! I was thinking of painting a few clouds and whatnot to the sky blue to temper it some. I did not view it as a marine hue though, so maybe dibujos of the bottom side of fishes would be better.

I'd trade in my husband and daughter for someone who had a clue about how important these things were to me.. . . 'Just kidding, of course, but I'd bet tempted!

Ignoring the question of color -- my experience has been that there is a very close relationship between the quality of the paint (how long it will look good on the wall) and the price. There is no such thing as a good, cheap paint. For my projects here in Lerdo, I pay a little over $400 pesos for 4 litros of paint I consider to be just barely good enough.

My own house was painted with a cheaper brand, and after only 3 years, it needs to be repainted.

Spend real money to get real paint.
