This is an old subject, but just to update, it still pays to be wary of street taxis in Mexico City. There have been several stories in Mexico City newspapers in recent days about rapes in taxis. I was fortunate enough to escape a robbery and/or kidnap attempt on Sunday by forcing my way halfway out of the cab as the attackers entered and yelling enough that they got nervous and decided to get out of there -- taking my laptop, tho not my money and cards. I was also fortunate, I suspect, in that they did not seem to have a knife. This occurred at about 6:20 p.m. , full daylight, in front of the Hospital Durango in the Roma --a fairly well-travelled location less than two blocks from a major police station. (I caught the cab in the Zona Rosa -- so they are still prowling for tourists). I have lived in Mexico City for 12 years now. This was the third time I've been attacked in a taxi (and the second time I escaped at the start). I take taxis most days, sometimes several times, to work and around. I'm generally VERY alert, at least as compared to the normal tourist. In conclusion, your chances of getting attacked in a street taxi are fairly slim, and reduced from a few years ago, but it would still be advisable for tourists to stick to "sitios," which are more costly but far safer.
