Mercadolibre.com - ebay affiliate?

Has anyone bought items through http://www.mercadolibre.com.mx/? Do you have an opinion about the safety of using your credit card for these online purchases? Do you know if it is an affiliate of ebay.com, or is it just a similar type of site?

Muchas gracias!

Here is a partial answer. I have friends who use it all of the time and speak highly of it. I guess they pay via credit card or Paypal. Sorry I can not be more helpful

I don't believe that Mercado Libre is affiliated with Ebay. I have browsed the Mercado Libre site, and it seems that individual businesses list their products there, and Mercado Libre is out of the loop when you buy something, you are dealing directly with the business selling the item when paying for it. We have never bought anything from a Mercado Libre business. Many businesses in México offer 2 options to pay them besides via credit cards. Sometimes paying with a credit card is not an option. You are often given the options of making a deposit into their bank account, or to pay COD when the item is delivered to you.

About 3 years ago I ordered some TableMate TV tables from a company online. It was not a company that listed them for sale using Mercado Libre. I paid for them COD, that way I knew they didn't have my money before I had the things I wanted to buy. A TableMate table is great for holding a laptop above my lap and not on it when I am sitting in my recliner chair.

Last week my suegra wanted to buy something she saw advertised on TV. My wife placed the order via telephone. Again, it was paid COD. It was delivered a few days later. My personal opinion is that ordering something COD is the safest way to do it in México. I won't risk using a credit card with a Mexican business. Paranoid? Possibly. Safe? Definitely.

There is an affiliation between E-bay and Mercado Libre - read here:

I bought a water pressure pump on Mercado Libre about a year ago. I paid via bank deposit into the vendor's account, and the pump arrived within a couple of business days via Estafeta. It's a great product, and even with shipping from Morelia to La Paz, I saved 2,000 pesos off the local price. ML seems to rely heavily on the buyer and seller ratings as an indicator of reliability. I was a first-time buyer from a first-time seller, so I guess there was a bit of a risk, but it went fine.

Papirex, Who in the world in México ships COD? I've been in business here for 12 years and have never been offered COD terms, nor have I seen them offered anywhere. What shipping company accepts COD shipments? These are serious questions, as I have occasion to use the service once in a while for books I ship out.

I have heard of the freight companies accepting Freight Charges on Delivery, but COD never.

They are somehow affiliated but I am not sure how
I bought a dog through them
In my case the vendor paid the fees to MercadoLibre
I agreed with the vendor on conditions and price and paid the vendor directly.

Thanks to all for your comments. I think that for me, the key will be doing business strictly with businesses who have high ratings, just as I would with ebay in the states.

I don't really remember who I bought the TableMate tables from 3 years ago, it might have been Betterware or Marke, but I am not sure anymore. The vendor was in México City and there was no extra charges for delivery there. There was a $100 Peso charge for delivery anywhere else in The Republic. I paid only $100 Pesos (about $10 US Bucks at that time.) to have them shipped to Cuernavaca. There was no extra charge for choosing the COD option. I seem to remember that the shipper was Estafeta but that is a guess based on my often faulty memory only. I paid the driver for the shipment.

About a week ago my wife called a number that was in a TV ad to order a Tobi clothes steamer and a travel steamer for her mother. The package was delivered 3 days ago on Monday. The shipper was Multi-Pack. I paid the driver $2,792 Pesos which included all charges.

The vendor is listed on the factura as: MejorCompraTV, the shipping charges were $346.08 Pesos, and the IVA was $364.18 Pesos. There is no extra charge listed for COD service.

This is probably not much help, but I don't have much info. I only know that we have used the COD option a couple of times when it was offered as an option to pay.

Good luck, Rex

My husband buys (and sells) his music equipment on Mercado Libre. Most popular procedure seems to be direct deposit into bank account before the deal moves forward. Paypal is also in Mexico, but I'm not so sure it has an affiliation with Mercado Libre the way Paypal in the USA has with Ebay.
