Menaje and Customs Broker

Can't Post | Private Reply
A Mexican Citizen returning to Mexico with an approved Menaje de Casa, is he required to use a customs broker? If not, is it wise to use one anyway? Hubby leaving for Mexico on June 1st and I would appreciate assistance.
Thank you
Bethie

Aduana will usually required a customs broker to deal with a menaje. It has been reported that this requirement may be waved at some of the smaller crossings, but there is no guarantee.

I think it might depend on what's being imported, and the value, on the Menaje because I know many people who have come right on through Nogales with their Menaje de Casa's and no customs broker was required or involved. Stuff loaded in your personal vehicle is not the same as a moving van full of goods.

He won't have much, only about 10 boxes (we made a list of everthing in each box) books, cooking utensils, plates, and about 4 luggage of clothing. One TV and one VCR/DVD player, some personal hand tools, few lamps, end tables. All in a little truck with a cap on it. The Mexican Consulate in Washington DC said "maybe, maybe not". He is crossing at Columbia Bridge. Worth of all this stuff at a flea market would be...not much. I just worry for him that if he doesn't have a broker and they want to confiscate his stuff at the boarder or something like that. If it is just a matter of paying 15% on the items, well $150 or $200 bucks is alot, but what are ya gonna do.

I go to Mexico at least once a year with more than what you are carrying. I take a small trailer load. I don't qualify for a menaje so I just pay for the big ticket items. The rest, they just ignore.
If you have a manaje and your items are used you should have no problems. I have never used a broker even when I have taken much more.
You will be just one of dozens if not hundreds that they see every day.

Hola!

I have dual citizenship and have been across the border so many times I canīt count since I moved here. I have brought so much down here it is unreal. I have come across in various vehicles and I have never had a problem. They have checked me but what they are looking for is new stuff. There are penalties for bringing new stuff across the border without paying the imposed tax. They have never said anything to me regarding used stuff. As many people bring things not only for themselves but their families, they donīt really care as much. But new stuff is a different story. From what I understand, you can bring $75 per person of new stuff into Mex. except during Mexican holidays which will then allow $300 per person. What they are looking for is new stuff. I even flew in by plane and all they are looking for is new stuff so they can get that tax. Hope this helps.

I think we are going to bypass the broker, take a chance for a green light. Thanks to everyone's input, we appreciate it!

He should have no trouble with the crossing, as that's the whole point of the "Menaje de Casa" . The items listed are already approved to enter duty-free.
