Menaje/register FM3/Car with FM3

Can't Post |
Hello all, My husband and I are new to the site. Our house is on the market here in the States and we plan to move to Mexico for a year or so as soon as it sells. We have a 7 and 10 year old. I have several questions if someone would be so kind to respond.

1) We're looking for a small beach town that's within a few hours bus ride of a bigger city. Any suggestions? 2) What is a menaje? 3) You have to register your FM3 in the city you live? 4) If we are denied FM3 status can we still drive our van down on a tourist visa and renew the visa in 6 months and thus the van also? Thanks, Kirsten

Hi Kirsten. Welcome to MexConnect.

1. There are so many little beach towns on the west coast that might be just right for you. You really need to take some long rides down the coast and check them out yourself.

2. A menaje de casa is a permit issued one time only to an FM3 holder to allow the importation of your household belongings and computer duty free.

3. You must register your FM3 at the immigration office serving the area where you live. There's not likely to be one in a small town; you'll probably find it in the nearest city.

4. Why do you worry about getting an FM3? If you meet the income requirement, you should have no problem. But, yes, you could come on a tourist visa (FMT), but you can not get a menaje on an FMT. Now going back to the border to get a new FMT and car permit every six months is not a sure thing. For many years (always?) that has been possible. The rule, however, says only one FMT and car permit per year. The rumor is that as the permitting process becomes more computerized, this rule may be enforced. Thus far I have not heard of anyone being refused. Nevertheless, I'd think twice about building a life in Mexico based on the hope that you could renew every 180 days.

You can learn a lot more about getting an FM3 and menaje on my website at http://rollybrook.com/...o_move_to_mexico.htm
