Maybe Someone Knows

You were all so helpful with my last question my partner has posed another one I cannot answer. We are both considering Mexico as our retirement home together but she is not an American citizen. She is actually a German national, who has lived in the United States for the past 25 years. I would imagine that moving would require the same process as me in getting the FM3 papers, but what about the entry requirements? Since we are partners but not married does she have to meet the same income requirements as me, or do I just have to meet the income requirements for supporting both of us. As long as she has a valid green card I do not suppose she would have any problems traveling back and forth when we decide to visit friends "up north". Like I said originally, The move is not planned for a couple of years and things might change between now and then as far as the laws go, but thought I would start asking questions now. As soon as I finish my college degree we will be seriously looking and trying to decide which area appears to be the most appealing for us to settle in.

Your partner will have to meet the same income requirements as you do. She is not your wife, and she's not your dependent. In order for her to enjoy the 50% reduction in the income requirement accorded to a dependent, you'll have to marry her.

Her permanent residency status may be adversely affected by a prolonged period outside of the United States. Read http://www.visalaw.com/01jan4/12jan401.html for a discussion about preserving permanent residency status during prolonged trips abroad. This may be an opportune time for your partner to consider naturalization as an American citizen.
