Living/Moving To Mexicali

Hi Everybody,

I wanted to get some feedback from people that currently live in Mexicali regarding safety. My mother was born and raised in Mexicali and has decided to move back there for retirement, which will be much more financially feasible than trying to continue living in Los Angeles, CA. She is not worried about it since she grew up there and says the media makes things worse, but being born and raised in Los Angeles and hearing about all the violence in Mexico makes me a little worried.

Also, I wanted to know the best way of moving her personal items (bed, furniture, clothes, desk, etc.) down to Mexicali from the USA? U-Haul will not let their trucks cross the border. Any advice would be great!

Thanks!

Marlene

We have relatives living in Mexicali, and they like it and are doing fine.

As a long time resident of Baja California, I must say that I am surprised by your inquiry. Mexicali is considered the Siberia of Mexico. If the State Government sends you there, then its considered a punishment. Its polluted with Agricultural Chemicals. Its very cold in the winter and hot as hell in the summer. And the Electric Company is always saying its going to take away the subsidies that allow you to run the Air conditioning all summer long without paying the actual price it costs. Without that subsidy Mexicali would not be habitable in the summer. And it is a Drug Corridor to Los Angeles because of the US efforts to move the smuggling east from Tijuana and Tecate. It would be a very bad idea for you to move to Mexicali. There is only one positive thing: the women are pretty and nice.

The person who is moving to Mexicali is the OPs mother. I doubt the existence of pretty women is one of her motivations for making the move!

That sounds dire.

So the agricultural chemicals and the extreme weather hasn't affected the desirability of the local lasses?

This is interesting.
Así pues...aquí estamos...
