Legal Driver?

Can't Post | Private Reply
Hi everyone:

My girlfriend and I will be moving to the Lakeside in about 6 months. We are selling my car and driving hers. Am I OK driving her car in Mexico without her in the car? If not, any suggestions on what to do?

Thanks for your help,

David

Those authorized to drive a temporarily-imported foreign-plated car are:

1. The importer
2. His or her kinfolk as described in the other posts.
3. Any foreigner having the same immigration status as the importer.
4. If the importer is present in the motor vehicle, any licensed driver.

After that, move on to part 2 of the inquiry: what does your insurance policy require as to who can drive the car?

Good point, Georgia. I know her current policy covers me when driving her car. When we purchase Mexican insurance before crossing the border, I'll make sure that the policy covers both of us. Thanks for the reminder.

and I can prove it: Does uninsured motorist coverage count for someone driving the insured's car or only other, uninsured vehicles? I'm continually confused by the insurance industry; is the Vehicle insured or the Driver? If its the vehicle why does the driver have to qualify to be insured, if its the driver then why does the owner of multiple vehicles, who can only possibly be driving one at a time , have to insure the whole "fleet"?

Uninsured motorist coverage: covers your losses when another driver who caused your loss doesn't carry any or enough insurance to pay for the loss.

Liability insurance: protects you (insures you) against loss on claims for damage you do.

Collision/theft/all perils: covers your vehicle (always when there is a loan on the vehicle) for losses incurred in an accident/theft/etc.

If you own several vehicles and there is only one licensed driver in the house, the insurance premium will often be adjusted downward. Depends on the state you live in.
