Jobs in Mexico

Can't Post | Private Reply
I'm thinking seriously about a career change in the next couple of years. I'm 53 and have a background in construction and am currently working in the financial industry.

I'd like to look at a career change that has employment possibilities in Mexico.

I have thought about the property management field. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Patrick.

There are a number of foreigners working as property managers here in Mazatlan. Getting permission to work, for yourself, as a property manager should not be that difficult. There is, however, a lot of competition in that field (like real estate sales) and it might take you a few years to get established and earn enough to make a living.

You didn't say if you have skills in the local language, however doing business here means having the basics in Spanish, especially property managing where you need to deal with tradesmen and repairmen who don't necessarily know English.

Hi Patrick,
We are looking for a property manager/caretaker for our ranch on the coast 2 hours south of Puerto Vallarta. You are welcome to email a resume to me at theotherhollyhunter@gmail.com or visit my FB site, use the same email and you should find me? There is also a need for a more traditional property manager in Guanajuato. In both cases you would most likely want to supplement your pesos with dollars as there is a large discrepancy in income in Mexico. When young men spend an entire day hauling heavy bags of sand and concrete for $200 mxn, do the conversion, it's pretty tough. Then the cost of living is much less here. In our case we will provide housing at the coastal property. I don't normally post here so you can reach me at the email address above for additional information.
Good Luck!
Isabel

Good points, but I should have some monthly income in place already, I'm looking at only working part time.

I am currently studying Spanish, a long way from fluent but working at it.

I was down in Puerto Vallarta a couple of weeks ago, there doesn't seem to be much of a "bed & breakfast" industry present, or was I just not looking in the correct place?

Patrick.

I couldn't say with certainty about Puerto Vallarta, but here in Mazatlan we have several B & B's.

Hi Patrick,
I have a wonderful small B&B where I stay anytime they have room and I have to be in Puerto Vallarta. I will try to find your email again so I can share that with you off line.

The B&B industry in Mazatlan is relatively new and its grown quite rapidly over the past 5 years.

The initial up front investment of 1/2 million USD may be a significant deterrent for many people to start in this business. Besides it looks like there are already quite a few B&B's in PV. Twenty Eight of them!

If you decide to seriously consider that business, send me an email. I've got good friends here in Mazatlan that run a couple of the B&B's. I'm sure they would be willing to give you the inside scoop.

Hello Patrick,

You said: >>I was down in Puerto Vallarta a couple of weeks ago, there doesn't seem to be much of a "bed & breakfast" industry present, or was I just not looking in the correct place?<<<

A gpogle search of Bed & Breakfast + Puerto Vallarta turned up some 12 pages or more. On the first page there were 10 different Bed and Breakfasts in Puerto Vallarta listed of which two were announced as Gay. You should be able to find there as many possibilities with a google searach as you might need.

Actually your post might work very well in New York if posted on a Spanish language forum. That is how it's done; find someone you know or from your area and they they will help you. How often my friends from Guanajuato answer the door of their Dallas home to find a total stranger who says (in Spanish), " I just arrived on the train from Mexico and my tia is your cousin and I need a job and I am really hungry and can I sleep indoors tonight. " They just say yes to all, wake him up at 5 am to go to work and never mind that he is only 15 and speaks no English and feels like he just stepped off onto another planet. I don't think this approach will help ttroyboy in Mexico. Now if he knew somebody . . .

But that was a good response, well thought.

Apart from such nasty details as the legality of your working in Mexico, I see one big problem. The kind of work ttroyboy can do is just the sort of work that tons of Mexicans do here (and NOB) to scratch out a living. Mexico has no need for more construction workers, maintenance men, painters and so on. If anything, there's a surplus of such workers here, which is why so many of them go north to find a way to make a living.
