We did something a little like what you have in mind, starting in 1975. For a look at what we've done so far see amongamigos.com. I can tell you that doing things with a bunch of other people is not all that easy, not even if you all are nice people and agree to abide by some guiding ideas (like elderwhaterveritis you have in mind). Just try to get all those old fogies to agree on how big that prestressed concrete dome (or whatever) should be and whether or not you should be putting a little mortero in the mix. And what color should you paint the rocks (and why paint them in the first place), and who is and isn't pulling their weight. Who's using too much toilet paper and why! If you hire other people to do things for you, they usually go over budget and take longer than expected. Who comes up with the extra money? If you do things for yourself, for the most part you have amateurs doing things. If everything belongs to everyone, does anything belong to anyone, and who is responsible for keeping things working? Who's in charge when you get right down to it?
