Importation of older vehicle

Currently, I have a FM-3, and a US plated vehicle. I am in the process of restoring a 1970 Volkswagen, and would like to bring it into Mexico for body and interior work. On another forum it was suggested it could be brought in as an antique auto. Does anyone know if this is possible. Thanks.

Vehicles older than 30 years can be imported permanently. You will need a customs broker to do it.

That's why I said to fuggitaboutit, BG. Importation would require retitling the car as a Mexican car, when all the OP wants to do is temporarily bring it in for some of the extensive renovation work necessary. I have a friend who does this all the time, but he avoids the problems by having only one car at a time in México. When he takes the renovated car back out, he turns that sticker in then gets a new one for the next one he does. Sort of a mini-maquiladora sort of operation.

I must have missed the "temporary" part.

I guess I wasn't clear in my original posting. My van is covered by my FM-3, but I was inquiring if the Karmann Ghia could be brought in as an antique auto in addition to the van. Once restored, the Ghia would remain in Mazatlan, as I have a year round rental there. When I return next month, looks like I have some research to do. I know I can rotate cars in and out of Mexico, but was looking for a permanent solution. Need to talk to Roger when I get back. Thanks for the suggestions.

This is my 5 year project: http://picasaweb.google.com/...bill/1970KarmannGhia#
