If you belong to IMSS, don't miss you renewal month! Friends just forgot to renew during the final month before their yearly subscription expired and have now have to start over "con restricciones"/with restrictions for one year. It is just lucky they were allowed to re-subscribe without any problems since both are over 65 and would probably not be able to get any other insurance in Mexico. They were told that even one day late was over the line.

We are moving to Puebla in September and I want to sign up for the IMSS right away. I will be 63 years old. Will my age be a factor? I am in good health. How can a find out where to sign up? How long is the process before my first year begins?
Thanks for the heads up.

You will need your birth certificate -- the official one, not the hospital one. Some IMSS offices want an apostille attached.

I didn't need anything but my passport when I joined IMSS almost 9 years ago--in Leon, Guanajuato. You will have to go to your local IMSS office to check the current and local requirements--and Rolly is right--get your birth certificate apostilled before you come down just in case. The first year has some restrictions (no pregnancy coverage being one, no transplants, plus others), so it is a good idea not to use your coverage during the first year so nothing can come up. After the first year you are covered for everything-- and your card will be stamped "sin restricciones".

In some places (particularly in the Lake Chapala/Guadalajara region), the period of IMSS coverage restrictions is much longer: three years instead of one.

I signed up for IMSS in Guadalajara and shortly thereafter moved to Morelia and transferred my IMSS membership con restricciones. The Guadalajara clerk who signed me up reminded me that I would be con restricciones for three full years.

At first renewal time the following year, I was amazed that my carnet (membership booklet) was stamped NO RESTRICCIONES. I thought surely the clerk had made an error, but no: that's how it works here in Morelia.

I too also missed the renewal date by a week and had to start over the first year. Yes, in Guad, it takes three years to get: Renovación Sin Restricciones. After 4 years I finally achieved “No restriction” status and wonder, should someone be late the following year, do they make you start all over again. Knock on wood, never had to use the services but you never know for sure.

The question is, in Guad, should you renew late after a 3 year full qualification period is granted, will they make you start all over again?

We just completed our 2nd full year with IMSS and the Guad office stamped our booklets "no restriciones".

Esperanza's, post indicated that she went from Guad to Morelia after one year after having registered in Guad and then in Morelia was stamped No Restrictions next time around. Something is a brewing, especially if yours was from Guad and got No restrictions second year around.

Out of curiosity, I looked at the last two years and yes, your right, they both were stamped “No Applican Restriciones. ” So, I guess after the second year, no restrictions must now be the going deal. I like that. Gracias

The outstanding question now still stands, if your late renewing after reaching not restriction status, do you have to start all over again?

Oscar, my carnet was stamped sin restricciones at the beginning of the second year. The other poster's carnet was stamped sin restricciones at the beginning of the third year.

The IMSS system in Mazatlan is so very over-taxed that my Mexican husband (who is self-employed) and I have decided not to be part of the problem. People who have earned (their employers have paid) into the system for years are sitting outside the emergency ward with broken bones for many hours, and even days, waiting for emergency treatment. A visit to my mother-in-law in Emergency while she had H. Dengue Fever affirmed we have made the right decision.

Did anyone see the clip on an American news channel just a few days ago, where Mexican doctors in a foreign retiree enclave are very concerned about the system collapsing and how foreign retirees could be contributing to that collapse? They interviewed retirees who said how tickled they were at not having to pay for their doctors visits or their prescriptions, etc. and how they could not afford retirement if they couldn't make use of the IMSS system. I viewed that with mixed emotions, knowing how the poor of this country is suffering.

I wonder if there are any Mexconnect IMSS subscribers living in Mexico City who have used its services in the last couple of years. I am paying into an expensive private plan that partially covers "gastos médicos mayores", which I have just in case something serious happens, but I'm still paying out-of-pocket for regular check-ups and tests, like mammograms and blood work. I know that the D.F. is a huge place with the quality of service varying quite a bit depending on which colonia you live in, but comments from someone who's actually used its services here would be greatly appreciated!

IMSS for expats in Cuernavaca???

Can't Post | Private Reply
I've been told that it's impossible for an expat to get IMSS in Cuernavaca. And I've also been told that it is possible. Anyone with fairly recent experience who can clarify this? Thanks in advance. Rob.
