Help with FM3 renewal

Can't Post |
It is time for me to renew my FM3, but it looks like my job situation is going to change. Can anyone recommend a good immigration lawyer in Cuernavaca? Or some other sort if assistance with FM3 renewal?

Why do you think you need a lawyer? Have you asked at the inmigracion office about the renewal? They always have given me a checklist of exactly what I need.

Hmmm. Do you live in Cuernavaca? I have been told, and also have found through personal experience, that the immigration office here in Cuernavaca is particularly difficult. My situation is complicated because I'm going to lose my current job and won't have time to secure a new one before my FM3 expires. I'm thinking it will just be easier all the way around if I have someone who knows what they're doing to help me. I've been given the name of a lawyer in Mexico City, but it would be more convenient for me to work with someone local. Still looking for suggestions.

I live in Cuernavaca, I am sorry I can't give you any help with finding a lawyer for your problem. I do agree with you that the immigration office here is difficult. I would say impossible, to deal with.

After waiting for three hours in line, I was told I would have to get a new FM3, proving income, etc. again. My Fm3 was only three months old at the time. When I told them it was illegal for me to possess more than one FM3, they insisted that I get another because "The head of the Delegation wants to know what you are doing."

I later found out this was a lie. I talked to someone that knows the head of the Delegation here, and he said he likes Expatriates, and encourages them to live here. I left my mother in laws address in Mexico City as my address, and renew it there. I won't even try to deal with the immigration office here now.

I am sure they were fishing for a bribe. I don't pay bribes, not in 29 years. The last time I renewed my Fm3 in Mexico City I told the man at the counter what my problem was here in Cuernavaca. He said "Nobody can deal with them."

You might want to try contacting the Newcomers Club here, they may be able to help you. If you do find a local immigration lawyer here, please post it. I have considered trying to deal with the local office through a lawyer. In the meantime, my official address is in Mexico City.

The URL for The Cuernavaca Newcomers Club is: http://www.clickoncuernavaca.com/newcomers/Newcomers.htm

Sorry I don't have more, I hope this helps a little.

Thanks Rex. I'm already in touch with the Newcomers group. That's how I got the name of the lawyer in Mexico City.

I'll keep looking, and as you suggest, if I find a local lawyer, I'll post it here.

Some people here in Chapala use a lady named Margarita Negrete de Alvarez (Mago) to help with government forms and filings. You can call her at 376 765 4199

You asked for the name of a Cuernavaca immigration lawyer, and my response may sound more like telling someone how to change the oil in the transmission when all one wanted was the name of a good mechanic, but here's my $.02 just the same:

First, go to INAMI's website and read everything pertinent to your situation carefully. Print out what you need. http://www.inami.gob.mx

Then, go to INAMI in Cuernavaca, with what relevant documents you have. Advise them of your situation, and ask them to outline for you what steps and further documentation you need. Take careful notes, or ask them to write down exactly what you need.

Go back the following day or as soon as you can, with all of the requested documentation (and whatever more you think could conceivably be necessary), along with your notes, and make the application for renewal.

Thank you to those of you who are offering me advice on how to get around my FM3 problem without a lawyer. But the trouble is that the delegation here in my city is very very difficult (some even say corrupt) and it is extremely difficult to handle even the most basic of matters here. And since my situation is no longer basic, I'm either going to need an immigration lawyer to help me or I'm going to need to go to the delegation in Mexico City. I'd prefer NOT to have to go to Mexico City, but so far, I still don't have the name of a lawyer here in Cuernavaca. So, if anyone has any suggestions . . .

I am not acquainted with this lawyer, but he was the only one listed in Martindale-Hubbell online in Cuernavaca. The cost to be listed in the directory, for a lawyer practicing outside of the U.S., is considerable, which should be an indication that he would still be in practice. He may have some leads for you.
