Getting My Feet Wet

After running across many articles attributed to MEXCONNECT I took the plunge and signed up yesterday. I have lived and worked in Mexico many times over the past twenty five years. One can never have to much information about Mexico. I plan to shortly post a question pertaining to used vehicle legalization. Whic forum would be the correct one to place this post? Thank you.

Saludos,

The General Forum or the Living, Working & Retiring Forum would be the appropriate place.

WELCOME!!!! Anything can be answered here as I have found out. Just ask.

Never fear where to post as a moderator will move it if you ask in a place where you might not get enough responses. They really do help as you just got a answer from JR one of the moderators who is helpful.

Supposedly the regulations regarding bringing an auto into Mexico are being liberalized as of Jan. 1. I don't know the details, but be sure you find out what they are. As I understand it, it will now be possible to bring an auto into Mexico, use it, and sell it here. At the present time, it is virtually impossible to sell a car here. This may change the necessity to register the car at the border.

Nobody knows what changes NAFTA brings after the first of the year but there are also other possibilities. Last year we saw on Mexconnext that there was a limited time offer to convert cars from US to Mexico registration. We took advantage of this and now have a Mexican plated car. Maybe there will be another this year.

Jerry....if you hear of this becoming available again, i.e. trading U.S. plates in for Mexican ones, please share it with us.

Other than being able to eventually sell the vehicle down here, what is the advantage of converting to Mexican registration? Some of my friends with Mexican cars pay alot more for their annual registration than I do with a Texas plated vehicle. The car permit is no big deal since it is valid as long as my FM-3 is current.

I legalized two 1993 vehicles several years ago when they had an amnesty program. My yearly registration fees in 2003 was about $42 U.S. for both vehicles. Now, when I decide to replace the vehicles, they can easily be sold down here in Mexico and I can either buy a Mexican produced vehicle or bring in an American plated vehicle, at any time, using my FM-3. I can even bring an American plated vehicle in without selling the other vehicles. My wife, a U.S. and a Mexican Citizen, brought in one of the vehicles using and FM-3. With the vehicles legalized, she no longer needs to pay to maintain her FM-3.

Your strategy is all right if you want to stay FM-3 all your life. Eventually, you may want to graduate to FM-2, which leads to inmigrado status. While you can continue to have that foreign-registered vehicle as an FM-2, once you've become inmigrado, that privilege ends.
