This is a Google translation of an article in today's Torreón newspper:

Gasoline increases again

The gasoline will further increase on 1 January, after two consecutive rises Magna rate in December and expected increases each month of 2010, the Treasury announced.

Beginning Friday, Magna gasoline and diesel will increase 8 cents per liter and Premium 9 cents.

According to Undersecretary of Revenue, Jose Antonio Meade, increasing the change aims to reflect the value added tax, which rose to 16 percent in the Revenue Act of 2010.

But at the same time, Treasury provides regular increases to the liter of fuel during the year.

With this increase, the Magna gasoline will cost 7.88 pesos per liter, the premium will be located at 9.66 pesos per liter and a liter of diesel will cost 8.22 pesos.

Magna gasoline had two increases in December. On 20 rose 5 cents per liter, the first increase since January 2009. On 26 December rose three cents per liter.

This increase led to the rejection of the Opposition in Congress, where the Standing Committee must summon the secretaries of Treasury and Energy.

Yesterday, Meade said keeping unchanged the price of gasoline "severely harm the country's public finances and would require more taxes to the public.

The official said the cost of gasoline in Mexico is below international prices.

He said that keeping prices "is not the best way to support the economy" because it concentrates the benefit "20 percent of the population with incomes above

You're still getting a good deal down there. At 13.07 MXN to 1 USD, 7.88 pesos per liter works out to about $2.25 USD per gallon. The US national average is 2.64 USD per gallon. Current prices here in Dallas-Ft. Worth are about 2.40-2.45 USD per gallon.

A good deal as long as you get the same fuel economy, and you don't tip at U.S. self serve stations nor do you get scammed.

Reefhound, I get 15 to 17 kilometers to the liter of Magna. As for tipping: practice is to tip IF the Pemex attendant does a special service for you in addition to pumping gas: windshield washing, air in the tires, oil check, etc. Although YMMV, I don't know anyone who tips for just putting gas in the tank.

Frankly, it's worth a lot to have Pemex with its full service at the pump. Getting all gussied up for an evening out and then having to stop to put gas in the car is a PITA, especially if the gasoline hose is dirty, if your gas cap is dirty, or if gasoline accidentally spills on your hands.

Not really, Ken. Bus drivers and taxistas buy their own gas, and hardly make ends meet now.

That's like . 4 of a EUR a liter and 1.57 EUR a US "wine gallon".

The fare for a combi ride from our pueblo to Pátzcuaro recently climbed from 7 to 9 pesos. Así es la vida.
All generalities are suspect, including this one.

With the increase in the VAT to 16% and the increases (more to come) in gasoline--which affect the price of everything-- I think all of us in Mexico are in for more inflation and a more expensive daily exisitence.

Yes, we are in for a round of price increases. Here is part of a Google translation of another article from today's newspaper.

Food is expected to increase between 8 and 10 percent from the rise in petrol. Rice, sugar, milk and other grains may have larger increases to 10%.

Organized traders warned yesterday that rising petrol, taxes and basic services in some cities will result in an increase of between 8 and 10 percent in food.

"It's going to be affected. The surprise increase in gasoline, coupled with tax increases and some services take us in despite increases between 8 and 10 percent for next year in food.

"It will be a widespread involvement and, unfortunately, will be the consequence of policies implemented by the Government, which occur at a complicated time for the economy," said Alfredo Neme, president of the National Confederation of Associations of Merchants Supply Centers (Conacca)

He said that the most affected will be the poor because most of their income is spent on food.
