I am no expert on the subject. I just know that I paid $5.90 pesos for a liter of regular in Ajijic last week. The prices have been going up very slowly down here. I don't think Iraq has had any impact on the price.

The price of gasoline goes up a few centavos on the first of every month. Regular should be at 6. something as of April 1st. Mexico's gasoline is produced by Mexico and is not dependent on the petroleum reserves in the Middle East.

While Mexico is petroleum producing country, it is also an importing country. A significant portion of the gasoline consumed in Mexico is imported, mostly from the USA. Mexico does not have the refining capacity to meet the country's needs.

I last checked gasoline prices in August 2002 when it was $5.76 pesos/liter. Now it's $5.90 for an increase of only two and one-third percent over about 7 months. Gas still cost more in Mexico, but the price is more constant than in the USA.

It will be interesting to see how stable the prices will remain in these troubled times.

More constant? It's the same price everywhere. There's no need to waste your time driving all over town trying to find the cheapest gas -- or a price war.

For many of us who live in Mexico, it's a waste of time even looking at the price per liter on the pump. There's no option but to simply gulp and pay up. It's not as if there's a choice, which is sort of a relief in and of itself. It's more a matter of thinking "Well, this tank just cost more, so I'll try to be more careful about unnecessary trips."

I'm glad to see that someone else corrected jjr, not me!

If only she read Mexico Connect e-zine, she'd have known what was what...

See the Lloyd Economic Report for January 2003: http://www.mexconnected.com/...s/llydeco0103.html#i (prices quoted in that paragraph are, of course, now slightly out of date)

Jerry and Tony, you'r 100% right. But it takes such a long time to drive to the border just to buy a tank of gas -- not to mention the gas it takes to get there. <g>

Do you have any idea how hard it is to bring back 40 gallons of gasoline as checked luggage on the bus?

Hi Tony,

It may be a conspiracy---I think I got the same message but I'm evidently not as brave as you, to actually break cover on the subject.

jj, train that big dog of yours to do the Saint Bernard routine with a gas can instead of a cask.
