Freight Forwarder for Moving Stuff to Mexico

Hola,

My husband and I have about 45 boxes of varying sizes to move from CA to Morelia. We got estimates from 3 moving companies (recommended by others) and all came in at a price of $4500 to $5000. This is more than we want to pay and are considering simply getting rid of most of this stuff in CA instead of moving it.

We have heard that some people used freight forwarders when moving to Mexico at a less expensive cost than regular moving companies. We'd like to check out this option. Do any of you have recommendations for freight forwarders? Any negatives to using a freight forwarder?

Have you contacted whitemovers@mail.com their no is 210-745-2479 also contract asku@choosechapala.com. Also the Lake chapale form has many answers to your question. Might consider having a large sale at your house, but from what I have been told only bring the things that you will need. Since we are planning to move to Lake Chapala in a few years we are going to move to san Diego and store all the things we will need then move down their in about 6 months. You didn't say where you are planning to move to, but I wish you the best of luck. Did you try Roadway they move international.

Yes, we contacted Strom White Moving in Ajijic -- they were one of the too-high bids. The info on the Lake Chapala forum is mostly related to traditional moving companies. I am interested in finding out about freight forwarders, who do not pack for you, but supposedly move your stuff for a lot less than traditional moving companies.

A poster on another forum has recommended ABF Freight Forwarders - you might check with them.

Your idea of using a freight forwarder has merits. However, in addition to packing, you will have to log and catalog everything with specialised info for "electronics".
Last April, we moved From Hemet (Riverside, Ca) and San Diego, combining 2 households. The moving company I used I will not recommend. I was charged over $11,000 to move us to San Felipe, a distance from Otay Mesa of about 130 miles. Now, this did include packing and moving a 2 br house in Hemet, same in San Diego, going through a Customs Broker and having them make the "inventory' for me to take to the MX consulate in San Diego for approval then returning to the movers.
As hard as I tired, we still took too much stuff which we ended giving a lot of stuff to an orphanage. I even rented a self storage unit in El Centro and filled it, and emptied it myself with a few trips, but that is another story living just 120 miles south of the border.
It seems that moving companies have limited Ports of Entry they use. I had 1 quote from a company wanting to drive my goods from San Diego to El Paso, Tx then back to Baja, and they didn't even smile!
I don't know if your driving to Morelia, but last June, I drove from San Felipe to San Migual de Allende and the toll roads were just fine. If you drove your goods, you would pay a toll by the axle, so a single axle trailer is rather economical.
Your 45 boxes should be a breeze. I had over 350! You could rent an enclosed trailer and take it yourself for a whole lot less, once the customs broker gets clearance from the MX consulant.
Also, be very aware that there is no consumer protection or "movers bill of rights" and I got about 12 cents on the dollar for lost items. And the moving company would simply not disclose the various costs related with the whole move, such as the cost for the custom broker in Otay Mesa.

Bob, thanks for sharing your experience with your move. We actually moved to Morelia about 8 months ago, but we will go back to California to make arrangements for this last load. I have a feeling we don't need all that stuff in the 45 boxes and can reduce it to maybe half or 3/4 of its size. We will not be driving back but flying, but I think we might be able to find a way to ship the remaining boxes.
